Great record. I used to watch mtv all day long and since VH didn't make a video for the album I assumed it didn't do very well. They started playing the Blue Angels Dreams video and honestly I thought it was fantastic. Recorded Unleashed and Summer Nights was so awesome I had to finally go get the cassette. Honestly it's awesome despite the production it still just kicks ass. Love every song on it even WCTBL and LWI. I used to not like Good Enough but over the last couple of years itsreally grown on me, I love that song now.

LWI is majestic. Much better song than WCTBL ...

I remember it like it was yesterday. Ditched school, drove down to Tower Records at 10am, picked up the CLEAR cassette, lit up a couple of chocolate tai doobies with my buddy, we popped it in the VW Squareback's fully jury rigged Pioneer system, and blasted that puppy full bore windows down on a sunny SoCal day, cruising the beaches, at first weirding out over the new sound, weirding out over Sammy singing instead of Dave, but by the time Inside played out, we were converts. Played it ten more times the rest of the day, took a break and surfed at Rincon, then spent the rest of the day wallbanging across the central coast, finished up at In n' Out in Camarillo fully loaded, jonesing for double doubles, and in the parking lot no less than three other cars were blasting the new VH album.

Summer Nights still the tentpole track for ol' 5150. Though I have a soft spot for the opener. Good Enough is STILL one of the best lead-ins for any VH album.

A good day for Van Halen.

really is a great record. I thought the production on it was almost a little too clean though. A song like Summer Nights for instance played live is such a better song, just had oomph to it. Same with the title track.

Summer Nights live was EPIC. Actually, any of the songs where Eddie brought out the Steinberger live were pretty epic.

After hearing WCTBL on the radio, I was sure I wasn’t going to like the direction Van Halen was going. I got home from school and my roommate bought the CD that day, and put it in the CD player in his room on his stereo with massive Klipsh speakers (that sat on the floor on either side of his stereo system). The speakers were about 3 1/2 feet tall. He pushed “play” and I remember hearing Sam say “Hello Baby...” Ed's guitar kicks in, followed by Al's drums, and I totally dug “Good Enough”. The guitar solo was Epic (still one of my favorites on the CD). But this wasn’t the Van Halen I knew and loved, Ed's Tone was really unexpected and different. Next was WCTBL, which I wasn’t a fan of, but when “Get Up” started, I was in the zone, I was picking up what Van Halen was puttin Down. The rest of the songs played on, I had mixed feelings about “Dreams”, I wanted more songs like “Good Enough” and “Get Up”. Totally dug “Summer Nights”, this was Van Halen! BOBW and WIL were total let downs to me (I still don’t like those 2 songs to this day). Luckily “5150” and “Inside” closing the CD kept me interested and excited about this new iteration of Van Halen. Kinda fun to think back to that night in 86 when we cranked up the new Van Hagar CD. I saw VH twice that tour, once in Philly and once in Dallas, Great Shows!

5150 is my favorite Van Halen album. I would have preferred a finished version of I Want Some Action to Get Up, but what the heck. I wore out two cassettes in the Summer of '86. I loved Van Halen's fresh sound with Sammy. IMO, Ed took what he was doing with keys and dialed it up several notches from 1984.

Good Enough: This new version of Van Halen had me at Hello Baby. What a smokin' opener.
WCTBL: Haters move along. This is a much better keyboard tune than anything on 1984.
Get Up: This song is too chaotic for me.
Dreams: The quintessential Van Hagar song: Ed's keys were awesome, Sammy's lyrics were awesome, Ed's solo was to die for, and Sammy's vocal performance was off the charts.
Summer Nights: It's been a perennial Summer time anthem for me since '86
BOBW: The album version was killer enough, but LWAN convinced me that Sammy and Eddie had and would continue to conquer the world together.
LWI: This song moved me and still moves me every time I jam it.
5150: This song had to grow on me. I was not swept away at first, but I kept going back because something was special about this song. It finally clicked and I never looked back.
Inside: Every time I hear this song, I feel like I am a fly on the wall in 5150 Studios witnessing a new and mind splitting version of Van Halen come to life.

Thank you Mike, Al, Ed, and Sammy for this magical album.

BOBW really suffers from the production. The opening riff just doesn't have any balls on the album. But it smokes on LWAN, even though it gets demerits for being a ripoff of Celebration.

agreed. I think BOBW, Summer Nights and 5150 are the 3 that just sound so much better live. I'm not a sound guru by any stretch, it just sounds too "clean" on the record. Almost too perfect. That's probably a horrible description. But I'm doing laundry at 1 am as I type this. I'm amazed I can think straight.

WCTBL is in a tie with Not Enough for absolute worst keyboard tunes in the VH catalog. Even FSG is better than those two.

There's absolutely nothing interesting going on musically with WCTBL. No interesting drum parts or fills, no interesting guitar fills or solo, just lazy paint by numbers mid 80s keyboard pop rock. Sooooo glad the rest of the album did NOT follow that formula.

Good Enough is the best album opener of the Hagar era, and Get Up, "5150", Summer Nights, BOBW are all solid VH guitar rockers. Dreams is a great anthem, and Inside fits the VH tradition of weird, quirky deep cut album tracks. I'm not much of a fan of LWI, but it is well written and has some cool parts to it.

Yeah, I was never a big fan of Ed's tone on the album, it is too clean sounding. No edge to it, but it did fit with the times. I was glad that he went back to a more raw, heavier tone on OU812. Obviously, the really fake sounding 80s Simmons drums hurt the whole album. I'm glad that Ed and Al sound different on every album, but 5150 is down towards the bottom of VH albums for drum and guitar tones. The songwriting and performances, though, still propel it ahead of FUCK, Balance, and III.

Look, I realize I'm not a fan of certain VH tunes that are popular(WCTBL, Not Enough, LWI, etc.) but I'm still going to stick to my opinions when discussing them. There are people on here who certainly aren't afraid to say they hate some of my favorite tunes, such as EWS and the much maligned LOC, and that's fine. We all are going to have differing opinions on things.
