Pretty funny article. Appreciated the humor and most of all the author's stamina and bravery. He actually seemed to listen to VHIII to do that review. Damn!

Being the selfish bastard that I am, I was hoping they would stay together and remain relatively unpopular, so I could catch em live at the House of Blues or some shit. Imagine that...

My sympathies to anyone that has ever listened to VHIII all the way through. I don't have the strength to do that.

VHIII is like the Star Wars prequels. Some good ideas with poor execution because the idea guy had nobody around to tell him which ideas were good and which ones sucked.

Still, I'd have rather gotten VH3.2 than the void that was '99-'04, and the dark era that was '04-'06.

They achieved greater commercial success with Hagar than they had with Roth ó every Hagar-era album hit #1 on the Billboard charts and went platinum or multi-platinum ó but the music changed, at first in subtle ways and then a lot. The singles ó ďWhen Itís Love,Ē ďFinish What Ya Started,Ē ďRight Now,Ē and all the rest ó were longer, slower, and less focused, their bland AOR-ness lacking the marriage of pop hooks and anarchic fun that had made the band great in the first place, and they always felt two minutes too long.
    Dude nailed it.

Agreed for the most part. I like most of III, yet realize the dips in quality and the expected songwriting formula. Having said that, a copy of the cd will always be in my collection.

I agree about the void being dismall after this lineup failed commercially, and also wanted to hear the follow up album. Also about the 2004 thing... Can you imagine if Ed was playing like he was on the '98 tour? Whew!!! That's why I'd love to see him give the Sammy era stuff another shot - with his current mindset and playing in top form.

Ultimate Classic Rock has a new article on VH3, too. It's a roundtable discussion, and I was honored they asked me to participate.

I enjoyed the answers from all their writers. They have a great staff.

All I know is I enjoyed the hell out of the show I saw on that tour. Ed, Al, and Mike were on fire that night. The album itself had some good moments, but let's face it, it just was not going to be well received by the masses after the 1996 debacle.

I was dumbfounded in 1998. I couldn't believe it had come to this.

Gave it another try two years ago when I finally managed to put down ADKOT, and now I keep coming back to III every few months.

    Three reasons.

    It's different and ambitious.
    I haven't heard it a billion times.
Ed is pouring his heart out.

That tour was amazing, performance-wise. In all honesty, my favorite VH shows were with Gary.

You guys were each asked to pick the three best tracks on the album. You'd think, with a terrible "failure" of an album, it would be simple enough to pick the same few standouts.

Instead you guys named nine different songs. Every single track with vocals except HMSI was named!

So I guess you could argue they all sucked equally, but to me this speaks volumes about how close III came to being a wildly interesting album.

Great guitar playing on III; lots of cool ideas that Dave or Sam could have run with. As said on the round table, Sammy could have done something really cool with "Once". And Dave would have torn into "Dirty Water Dog" and totally made it his own.

EVH should just recall III, rip it apart, and invite those two guys to remake it in their own styles. Never happen!

Edit - invite Mike too. Duh!

The beginning of Eddies slide in creativity, very noticeable parts of music put together with no flow and making it a song. He’s never recovered from it. The BOBW tracks and ADKOT were the same. Very sad.
Still, they toured Australia, and the shows were awesome.
