I checked out III on CD, Cassette and live at the Gund. Good times. We still believed Van Halen could do... anything.

III had a few good tunes. Fire in the Hole and Without You immediately come to mind. I got to hear the band soundcheck Ballot or the Bullet at the VA Beach amphitheater in Aug '98. It sounded much better live.

I still listen to some songs once in awhile.

The tour was fantastic. Ed had a lot of energy and it was great to hear the old Classic VH tunes live. The set had an appropriate balance of Classic tunes mixed in with "3" songs along with Hagar- era songs.

It is interesting that Cherone sand Humans Being live before Hagar.

I'd still rather pick scraps of greatness out of VH III than listen to others best.

Well, yes - I'd rather grab shit out of a high society dumpster than one in the slums - just make sense that the pickins' would be better

There’s nothing I can really add as most points have been covered.

I like the one critic who said the VH brothers underestimated Sammy’s popularity within their own fanbase. I enjoyed VH3 the album and tour. The first show in May that I saw was awesome. I figured the band would have to grow their fanbase back. Then I saw them over Labor Day at Alpine Valley and there were maybe 5K in attendance. The band had sold 6 times that just 3 years earlier. The writing was on the wall. Instead of a rebirth it was the end of the band.

The brothers did some horrible shit to their other band mates and deserved to crash and burn.

When Sammy and Dave are telling the same side of the story you know they weren’t the liars.
    Eddie Van Halen in 2012:

"ESQ: What are you going to do with all the material that you wrote with Sammy Hagar?

EVH: Oh, I hadn't thought about that. That's some great music. They're just on vacation, maybe. They're off to college and they're going their own way. Who knows?"

Album was horrible mess, tour was pretty good although attendance was bad by VH standards.

First taste of failure for Ed both album and tour. That was his baby and the fans rejected it. I dont think he's ever spoken about that album since.

One of my favorite tours, and I was lucky to catch them at the Gorge on July 11th, the first leg of the summer tour, and attendance was solid.

By the end of the show, the typically rowdy and raucous Washington State VH crowd was actually chanting Gary's name. I knew the album hadn't sold that well, despite Without You being the number one rock song on Seattle rock stations for two months, but I never knew the tour was poorly attended at the time since I only had the Gorge show and the Sydney televised show to go on.

I agree with Jeff. The outro to Fire In The Hole is one of the heaviest and most menacing pieces of music VH has ever recorded. Those last 30-40 seconds would've fit on FW. They definitely should've written an entire song based on that outro music.

I enjoyed the album. I've gone in and out of liking it over the last 20 years but I was nuts about it when it first came out. I still stand by Eddie's guitar playing was great there just a few other things wrong with the album. It was my first time seeing Van Halen at the Portland show July 10th the day before the gorge show mentioned above. Show was great. Got to hear Eddie and Gary be guest DJs that day on my favorite rock station here in Portland 101kufo with our then Dj Craig the dogface boy who was a vh freak. Still have the cassette of it. For all that I have good memories of the vh3 era.

Nothing more to add since the articles and the others in the thread hit the nail on the head.
Having Gary as the lead singer couldíve been better but we will never know.

I was at the Chicago show during the May '98 mini tour.

The crowd chanted "Gary, Gary" at that show as well.

The tour started out with promise. I still had a great time.
