    Default 5150 (the song) tuning

One thing always bugged me about this.

On the 5150 tour, it was played in D instead of E, but on every subsequent tour it was played (which I think was only OU812 & the '93 Euro tour), it was played in it's recorded tuning of E.

I constantly see bands tune down to compensate for vocals, but this might be the only example of a band returning to standard tuning after tuning down.

Basically: Does anybody know why 5150 was played a step down in 1986? Was it because Sammy was afraid he might blow his voice?

Not sure of the exact reason, but Sam wanting to save his voice might be a logical answer, possibly. But...., there were lots of vocal acrobatics on that album and in concert, where the band tuned normally. Maybe it was a question of Ed not wanting to have to switch guitars for different songs etc.? He's mentioned before about preferring to play one guitar for most of a concert, although obvious exceptions apply.

Hard to say. Sorry for just speculating... Btw, I've heard bootleg versions of Eruption from the club days where Ed is clearly tuned a whole step down for some reason. I thought it might be tape speed fluctuations from different generations of audio sources, yet the actual playing and phrasing sound on point with his regular versions.

    Go figure.

The original song is in Drop D right? Did they go to Drop C at some stage?

Then there's Good Enough, which had the A bass string in place of the low E, that they did play at least once in concert.

Good Enough was a regular in the 1986 setlist , most likely played on every date of the 5150 tour

Yeah, that's what I meant. Standard with the low E dropped to D. DADGBE.

But compare the LWAN version to any version from 1993 or the album. LWAN is CGCFAD.

Right on! As much as I love that era, I haven't delved into many '86 bootlegs. Go figure.... But Good Enough is a slamming tune with a great vibe.

I know on the 5150 tour Sam was having voice issues, at least on the Northwest/ Vancouver leg. He even apologized during the concert, saying the cold wet weather was affecting his throat. He did have a bit of trouble hitting a few notes he could normally nail easily.
Think thats why the inconsistency with the tuning of 5150 during the tour.
