Default HELP!!! Need drum purchasing advice

My boys have started bass and drum lessons. Oldest on bass. I found him a deal on an Ibanez and he bought it. That was easy enough as Iím comfortable with stringed instruments. Percussion for the younger, I have no clue. Any advice on what to buy, avoid, whatever would be appreciated. Not looking for anything fancy, just basics that he can add to later.

First, get him a paper route...

No clue on beginner drum kits. Perhaps check local listings and/or pawn shops? Cool that the younglings are into music. Bravo.

I would say don't break the bank on a set at first but get him a decent snare. My personal preference would be a used Ludwig. I have a 1960s Ludwig snare still sounds great.

The bank is small so it wonít be tough to break unfortunately. What are good features to look for and bad ones to to avoid?

How about an electric kit to start off with and then if it gets serious, then a proper kit.

Saw this on Amazon for under $300

Jungle Drummer might be able to help more than I can on this. Maybe PM him?

Years ago I bought a cheap 5 piece kit from Guitar Center for less than $300 including hardware and two cymbals.

It certainly wasn't professional quality but It was adequate for an amateur like me.

That's the route I'd go and then he can upgrade later if he sticks with it and gets better. You can replace the items one by one, for example getting a quality snare and better cymbals as he progresses.
The only genre I really know is Van Halen.

I would recommend you look for a USED Roland TD11 electronic Kit... Roland are the best at this category, and the TD11 is their mid range version. Definitely buy USED to save money... should be able to find one for $750.

A kid will have way more enjoyment, and a much higher chance of long term development with an electronic drum kit. They can have perfect sound through headphones and practice 10x more... they can also hook them up to a speaker and play with any amplified band.

The very best thing is that other people in the household are not getting disturbed because the kit makes so little noise when the player is using headphones.

The skills being developed are identical on a real kit versus a good electronic kit.

Check out how realistic the sounds are:

Even though I hate the sound of them, get him an electric kit. They are a lot cheaper, and you he can play using headphones so you don't have to listen to it if you don't want to.

The headphone aspect is a big selling point. Plus, they sound great. I almost bought one once. I was at Costco and they had one that I was tinkering with and was amazed.

Pearls are solid drums. Not a bad choice for an affordable starter kit, Ted.

Lol, just noticed this thread. I would recommend going onto Musicians Friend's website and checking out their affordable starter kits. Then, the ones that catch your eye, you can pretty much find sample videos of just about any kit on YouTube to get an idea of how they sound.

I use Musicians Friend as an example because that is where I've bought all my gear for the last 25 yrs and their service and pricing has always been excellent.

Also, on MF, you can read reviews from customers on every product giving you an idea on complaints or issues people have had with certain products.
