Most great teams are a product of a perfect set of circumstances. They don't last long normally. That's why Belichick is so impressive.

I thought the early 90s Cowboys really was based on them getting lucky and drafting Emmitt Smith. They at least were smart enough to trade up to grab him when he fell in the draft. He made the whole thing work. They could and did win without Troy (overrated)....but they could never win without Emmitt. Even when he sat out a play, they looked hopeless most of the time.

They changed at least one O-lineman every year during that run and every single one of them suddenly looked "great" when they were blocking for Emmitt. Including guys who had been around for years and never looked more than average. Undrafted free agents like Nate Newton and Mark Tuinei went from anonymous everyman players to Pro Bowlers. And those two guys were the only two who stuck around every year.

Funny how the Cowboys were batting 100% on acquiring "great linemen" (they never missed once) when Emmitt was in his prime but then suddenly lost that eye for talent completely when he got older. It got to the point where they had to give up and start drafting O-linemen in the 1st round in recent years in order to have a good O-line.

Look up the discrepancy between penalties for the Patriots and you'll understand their success, and lets not forget about the five years of spygate and deflate-gate scandals.

Jay Novacek was the hero of that 90s Cowboy teams.
