    I'm a bass player, by very definition, we are not musically talented enough to figure out all those pedals!!

    On a serious note, I personally just don't like stuff on my bass tone, I think it makes it sound like crap.

    The trick is to use effects to enhance a section of a tune or your playing, not to have them dictate it. Certain examples to the contrary, like Cathedral, where the delay is integral to the song etc.

    But having a few or even a lot of pedals doesn't mean you have to step on them all, or leave them on all the time. Less is more...

    I'm guilty of leaving on my Eventide Pitchfactor ALL the time. Even when it's "OFF" I have it set to a "Dry" preset that isn't really try, still stereo mixed with small detune and delay but still "dry" compared to the other presets.

    Delay is usually always on as a reverb, but the rest of my board comes on for small sections only (except of course the BE-OD that I always have on if I'm playing through my Mustang amp).

    I'm constantly changing my pedal board, and would like to claim the mantle of "tone chaser." While that it true to an extent, I mostly just do it because it's fun.

    That being said, I am in a phase now (and maybe it's not just a phase) where my pedal buying centers on tone shaping and not effects. I have an Echoplex preamp and compressor in front (I've tried about 5 kinds), a line booster in the loop, and a sonic maximizer at the end of the chain. All of these pedals are really there just to make everything sound good. It's not what Ed calls "jape," in other words. Just richness and clarity. Smoothness, or whatever.

    But I am by no means a purist. I also have a phasor, a flanger, chorus, and delay. Delay is on all the time and rest are used sparingly. And I deliberately put the flanger in the loop both for convenience and because it sounds more obnoxious there and I mainly use it for effected dive bombs. In other words, as a gimmick.

    It's personal preference and experimentation. Trust your ear, have fun, and keep the circle of gear going...

    I don't know if it's old age or what, but I've cut down dramatically on effects. The only thing I have now other than a Wah, Tuner, Fly Rig and 5150 Overdrive, is a Digital Delay and a Line Level Booster. I just felt like I wasn't hearing the tone of the guitar through all the effects. If my LBX had a reverb, I probably wouldn't even have a delay.

    When I was running a bunch of effects, I put all my time-based stuff in the loop. Otherwise, the effect itself gets washed out through the gain stages of the pre-amp. On Eddies live rig from his Sammy days, he actually put his time-based stuff post power amp. He had the output of his heads running into a dummy load, then inserted the effects, and routed that signal to some Power Amps that tied to his speakers. He also ran a dry signal with one head through to his speakers.

    I guess my point in bringing that up is that the closest you can get to that setup without all that equipment is to run through your effects loop.
