They hired Alan Fitzgerald (Montrose, Nightranger) to play the keys from offstage. Later on the 1998 tour keys were played by someone Gary Cherone frequently referred to in his onstage banter as "J.J.". Fitz came back for the 2012 tour (or earlier, not sure).

Yes the radio broadcast of Fresno is so much better. Many versions are always missing a few songs though. I think Rock Candy is one of them as well as a few others just have the tracklist all messed around everywhere. I have the RHRN cd single of Jump it has 4 tracks, the RHRN Jump, RHRN Love Walks In, but it also has a live Mine All Mine (probably from the mixed audio of Tokyo 1989 that Eddie decided not to release according to the VH Encylcopedia), as well as a live Eagles Fly. Strange release and unfortunately does not have The Dream Is Over coulda been a good EP with a few more. Now we know that RHRN was doctored in the studio a bit but I think less then Sammy claims in his book. Clearly on the radio recordings of Fresno and subsequent bootleg versions, the version of You Really Got Me/Cabo Wabo is identical to the version released on RHRN but for the rest who knows. There were Andy Johns DAT tapes for sale on Ebay and someone put up unmixed short samples of Man On A Mission online at some point from these DAT tapes. Sadly whoever bought them or has them now has not released anything by any of the bands including VH.

The cd store in my town is literally selling cd silvers of these. I guess there are like non illegal record labels releasing some bands radio broadcasts. They also have the 1983 Caracas show on cd too. lol It is a place that replaced HMV. So wild.

Maybe they switched from sequenced to Fitzgerald halfway through the 91-92 tour. They added "Right Now" only after the christmas break, in January 1992, on that tour, maybe there's a connection there.

Fitz is credited as "keyboard technician" in the liner notes for the RHRN record (so, for the F.U.C.K. tour) as well as in the credits for the Toronto 95 PPV. In that 1997 Jack Blades interview that's linked somewhere on this forum (http://www.melodicrock.com/interviews/jackblades.htm) he says that Fitz had been playing keys for VH for 5 or 6 years at that point.

Not that all this matters too much anyway from a music point of view because Fitzgerald played those key parts as if they had been sequenced.. no variation (to my ears) at all. What's interesting about it is that the band wouldn't reveal they had a player in the background, when they in fact had someone playing with them for years who surely wasn't a rock star by any means, but a well known and successful musician for sure. It certainly wouldn't have hurt the band to reveal that fact.

if you listen to the 91 Dallas Free Show, right before they start WCTBL Sammy mentions Fitz in some manner, I can't remember how.

I believe at some point in the past Fitz had worked with Sammy but can't remember the exact circumstances.

I am gobsmacked. I have listened and watched RHRN for over 20 years. I thought I knew the concert inside out. Just listened to Poundcake and straight away the drill intro is different. Differences in the others I have listened to as well. So this is the REAL gig. Why mess. Itís brilliant.

Man this is them at their height, I much prefer this mix over the official RHRN mix, you can really feel the thunder from Alís drums on this one and Edís tone packs more of a wallop here than on RHRN

    Default Fresno Ressurected

    Hello
you may have heard of my moniker I am using here but I am NOT S8S although I am in possession of all the fresno files, dating from 1976 to 2011
I am currently re-capturing/re-mastering the whole audio collection and doing it from the original tapes or at least digital transfers from them..I see a lot of interest in van halen era stuff and I am willing to dropbox the Fresno shows from either 5-14 or 5-15 92 at selland arena
I have the Original DATs of both shows and they are great quality
anyone interested in a link can post something here or send me a private message..
this is a limited offer and I wont offer it anywhere else
