    Sorry, not buying.

Willie Nelson has put out eleven studio albums and two live albums since DLR has been back in Van Halen, and tours constantly.

Somewhere along the line they lost the love for it. I get it, they are rich, but I think it is a waste.
Taylor Swift is nice to look at. Adele can sing.

Emperor Brett - "I can't believe you guys are analyzing song-by-song Van Halen III? What next, analyzing the script of Stroker Ace looking for some shred of Citizen Kane?"

David Lee Roth did the impossible. He made Van Halen better. Deal with it!

    Preferred pronouns: he/him/his

Hurricane Halen - Let's all gingery touch our sword tips!!!

DONATE TO THE LINKS YA CHEAP BASTARDS!!!!

I don't disagree, it's incredibly disappointing to not have more albums. But I'm not going to use that as a reason to expel them from the conversation of greatest band ever. People seem to love the idea of burning out bright and fast. Truth is, VH had a pretty incredible run of almost 20 uninterrupted years of massive success. Much longer than most bands, including the likes of Zeppelin and the Beatles and many others.

Fuck it, let's go controversial. And if we're gonna go controversial then we have to look beyond just the catalogue itself.

    1) Van Halen never attained the heights that their debut album suggested nor sustained the momentum and legacy that it delivered.

    2) The Van Hagar haters would be creaming themselves, and singing along to WCTBL, over Van Hagar if it was a separate, non-related band.

    3) The tunes this forum rates as legendary and quintessential (OFOTD LOC, EWS) are pretty shit.

    4) VH II is a major disappointment. More so even than Bernie Torme following Randy in Ozzy's lineup.

    5) Despite their debut album portending otherwise, Van Halen are far from being the greatest rock band ever.

    6) FSG is a fucking good tune and well-crafted despite Eddie struggling to complete it.

    7) Unchained is let down by everything that follows once then vocals kick in.

    8) Swagger does not exist. It's also abstract and subjective, thus it can be claimed by any fan of any band.

    9) It's also over-used on this forum.

    10) WCTBL is better than Girl Gone Bad.

    11) FSG is better than Girl Gone Bad.

    12) Inside is better than Girl Gone Bad.

    13) Pleasuredome is their most underrated song.

    14) Ed stopped being a 'great' in 1984. And stopped being 'top tier' in 1989.

    15) You're No Good is a fabulous cover. Up there with YRGM.

    16) Alex is just as much to blame for Ed's destruction of the band as Ed himself. Ed listens to his brother yet Al did nothing.

    17) Despite their historical relevance, VH will be long-forgotten (and soon) whilst their 70s and 80s peers will continue to echo down the decades to be remembered only by geeks guitar fans and music historians.

    18) VH are as much to blame for Sammy's decade-long hints of a reunion as he is - because they never shot him down and shut the door.. Their monk-esque silence leading to entire tomes on sites like this and You Tube.

I would have given anything for them not to split in '96. Humans Being/Respect The Wind are perfect in my eyes. VH were pretty much the only hard rock band to thrive into the mid 90s. Had they done another album with Hagar in the vein of Humans Being in either '97 or '98, they'd have lay claim to biggest rock band going into the millennium. Most likely would've gotten their 5th #1 album in a row. Might have even gone back out with Metallica on their Summer Sanitarium tour & done stadiums in the states for the first time since 1988. But, of course, I'm just a wishful thinker.

    Carry on, gents.
Itís funny when I listen to Humans Being and the BoV1 tracks I liked the direction they were going. The wheels came off on VH3, but I do think it has its moments that lead me to think they could have continued in this direction. The outro on Fire in the Hole, coming out of the guitar solo on One I Want and Thatís Why I Love You come to mind. I donít think anything associated with VH3 touches the last three songs they released prior to it, just that I see snippets of that direction on the album.

There is that but there's also the fact that some guys - you, Brook, Coulda etc - are cool enough to react in a chilled way despite barely able to comprehend the madness before your eyes - whilst others are.........less cool.

I'll give him "You're No Good" is a fabulous cover. He's spot on there.

And I agree with him to a point that VH never lived up to what their debut album seemed to suggest was possible. 1984 was going in that direction and then the split happened. But it's not just that. It's the refusal to tour overseas. It's the refusal or disregard for promoting the band's own legacy. These guys are their own worst enemies when it comes to that. They could have been another Zeppelin if they had the foresight and the desire to cement that as their legacy. So yeah, if you look at their entire career they underachieved.

That being said, they're not going to be forgotten anytime soon. At least in the states. There's a reason they're the second most played rock band on radio behind Zeppelin. And Ed's status as one of the greats alongside Page, Clapton, Hendrix, and Beck will ensure that they're never forgotten just as Zeppelin hasn't been.

As for the rest, yeah, I pretty much disagree as well but kudos to Blofeld for putting out some controversial takes for us to discuss.

This reminds me of David Cassidy's dying last words according to his daughter.

Fair point about the States, which I can't comment on.

The guitar is dying, remember? Everything's computerised and these bloody karaoke TV shows have killed the concept of the band/musician. And beyond that, too many of the 'next generation' are revering the 'other' legends whilst besmirching Ed and talking down his contributions. All the millenials smugly dismissing him with 'all he did was tapping and that was done many times before him, like Hackett and May and Gibbons'. in a 'god, didn't you know this already? How stupid are you?' condescending tone.

This shit about FSG makes me chuckle. It's not a bad song. I probably don't have anywhere near the dislike for that tune that some here do.

But IMO it's not one of their top songs, and the reason why I say that is I like my Van Halen in the vein of I'm The One, Hot For Teacher, etc.

Been cranking Judgement Day in the truck lately. Funny thing is my 6 year old is starting to sing along to it too. That's a track that is quintessential VH even if Sam's on vocals. And if Dave was singing FSG I'd still feel the same way about it, a good tune that's not my favorite Van Halen fare.
