    Default 1978 VH Footage

Along with the 1979 footage, the cleaned up 1978 footage has reappeared as well. I posted this in the Sammy thread, but I figured I'd put it here in case anyone missed it.

As a bonus it has I'm The One pretty much in it's entirety.

Could you imagine going to see Journey or Black Sabbath and these guys come out as the warm up act? I'm sure people were just blown away.

The only genre I really know is Van Halen.

Like I said in the '79 footage thread, we owe this guy a huge debt of gratitude!
This is where the world took notice and made them legends, not just the So-Cal people who saw them in clubs and backyards.

That's not a diss to the fans before the first album came out - simply saying that VH was a band that the world deserved and NEEDED to see & hear!

Can you imagine never hearing them before and seeing that right before Black Sabbath, already on a downturn, took the stage? How could you possibly take the headliner seriously at that point?

Eddie's playing at this stage of his career is just sublime. His attack is so unique. Even with all of the shredders that came after him, I've never heard someone playing licks like Ed does here where every single note is just cleanly picked with such attack that it sounds like a machine gun of sound. It almost has a percussive quality to it that makes the flurry of notes sound like a beautiful accent, rather than the main piece of attention.

Most shredders will have that smooth, metronome quality to their stroke that allows for a clean sound, basically attempting to eliminate the *thunk* of the picking to let the notes speak for themselves. Not Eddie. In combination with his brother's drumlines, it's like there are two drummers present when Eddie solos and they have a harmonic quality to them that I've never heard with any other band. Then you have these note combinations that sound like they are from outer space and don't sound like anything that came before it, yet somehow weave perfectly into the tune as if that's what you were supposed to hear this entire time and it was only Ed that could bring it to you.

I guess what I'm trying to say is:

    Cool video
CNN may think my opinion matters, but you shouldn't.

Before they opened for Black Sabbath in 78, they were playing some clubs around the country. Here in Virginia Beach, they played at Rogues. I was not old enough to get in (you had to be 18 and over), but I had a friend who had a older brother who went to see them in that nightclub. They would return to this area later in the summer opening for Sabbath, but damn, I would have loved to have seen them perform in a small club!

I have a bootleg of this on vinyl that I found at some record store in Whittier, CA around 1980 ...

This is the perfect statement on Ed's playing. And there's even more. There's a lot of good players but in terms of this description, and it's accurate, none are even in the ball park.

    "No commercial potential..."
Yeah, right. Mr. Accoin? You may have been a little off in your summation of the band.
