I've seen the Circle a couple of times and it was a blast. The band is tight and they have blast. That being said, I would much prefer a Chickenfoot album. I thought the first album was fantastic. The second one had some really good songs (Different Devil, Come Closer, Bigfoot, Something Gone Wrong) but it didn't stack up to the debut. I think a third album could find Joe improving as a songwriter for a band.

"CHICKENFOOT's got its own thing, but THE CIRCLE, we play LED ZEPPELIN, VAN HALEN, Sammy Hagar, MONTROSE, CHICKENFOOT… It's, like, to write songs that fit in that set, boy, they better be good, right? [Laughs] In between 'I Can't Drive 55' and 'Right Now', let's say, what are you gonna… a brand new one you're gonna slip in there? Phew! You don't wanna put the people to sleep".

    That's messed up Sam.

You didn't even mention The Busboys.

Yeah, it seems like he really wanted to play with Eddie again.

It's more a question of them not doing anything. If Sammy wants to do new music, he's better off on his own since VH isn't doing any of that. Sammy misses 1986, when everything was great. Don't we all?
The VH of that time is long gone, and it's not a question of Dave, Sam or Mike. That's the just the way it is.

CF def could create new music. It's just a matter of motive at this point. Would love a new CF LP.

CF had the potential to be a big player. I'm not big nor have I ever been on Smith. A drummer is replaceable in this type of band imo. I don't feel he was "heart & Soul" and Bonham would be an excellent replacement. The collaboration between Sam and Joe is the most important thing.

Sam covets VH but his destiny was right in front of him. CF was THE best way to cap off his career.

I agree that CF could've been much bigger with more commitments from key players for the long term, but I don't think there's any CF without Chad. There was a significant difference in tone and vibe between the I and III tours. I do think the drummer makes a difference. It just didn't have the oomph with Kenny Aronoff that it needed. Chad's stage presence is significant. I was reminded of that after seven - eight years of his absence at the reunion show in Tahoe. He really does make the difference, man. Honest.

Unfortunately, he was never going to quit the Peppers for CF. Not a chance. Best we can hope for is an album and a short 4 month tour, I imagine.

I think once Sam realized that CF wasn’t going to be an arena act and really couldn’t draw many more people than Sam solo, he dropped it like a hot rock.

Nah, I don't think it was ever Sammy or Joe that stopped the CF train rolling.

    It's always been Chad.

Perhaps but he was also whining about how much it cost to make an album...how he had to put all the guys up in a hotel blah blah for little return but he can crank out a mediocre solo effort like nothing.

I think one simple fact that is often overlooked is the WAY Sammy wanted to tour. Chickenfoot never had their own tour bus, like a band their size normally would. A band with one gold record. CF toured flying everywhere in Sammy's private jet, which he pays for. In other words, even if CF was doing well after the debut, I don't really think Sammy wanted to "go down" to that level where you need to work hard to build a band. Not from the ground up, but even from a mid level position to a high position. It's a probably a paradox for Sam - on a personal level, he can afford anything he wants. But on a professional level, CF kinda demanded he get in a tour bus and "work it" like new bands do. Which as a multi-millionaire in his mid 60s, he didn't want to do. So I don't think CF could've been a full time band, just because the position Sam's in. But could they record another album and do a short tour? Absolutely.

I agree that CF working the grind as an up and coming supergroup that needed to pay their dues for years was never gonna happen. I'm sure Joe and Mike would've been game, but Sammy and Chad, not so much. Hard to work the clubs and sheds after headlining stadiums.

I still remember the CF show at Fantasy Springs in Indio. Way out the high desert in east LA. Chad and Sammy were NOT happy to be working the casino circuit and made it clear with commentary during the show. To be fair, Fantasy Springs, no matter how much their flat fee paid, is a shithole of a venue.

I also think the knowledge that the timing affected the band's success might have created some frustration. CF in 1997 would've been much bigger. Platinum status for sure, and that must have been in the back of his mind.

At the same time, though, it's possible to distance yourself from this type of constant comparison game. Which Sam has finally managed to do, if the speculations about the new record in 2018 are to be believed.

Absolutely, creating a supergroup of VH expats, a solo virtuoso, and a random 90s icon was a long shot in 2009 no matter how good the music was lol.

I agree to a point. I think Sam at this point in his career makes plans in his head like he is still 50 years old, then his body reminds him that he is 70.
