We used to play an instrumental version of this when we didn't have a 'permanent' singer. Lots of fun to jam on.
Good call. I like the comparison. Great song.

I really like AFU and Source of Infection, but I don't think they are among the best songs on the album or in the Sammy era. AFU was a great concert opener and I thought Sammy nailed the lyrics and energy for Ed's music.

OU812 was a really good album. I liked some of the experimentation on that album. Better production and a few lyrical tweaks, and you've got yourself a fantastic album. I'm not one to nitpick lyrics, but Sammy admitted in his book that he didn't write the best lyrics for this album. Clearly, he wrote some great stuff for the album: Mine All Mine, When It's Love, AFU, Cabo, Feel So Good, and FWYS, but the rest needed more attention.

    AFU--opener
Mine All Mine--more like the live sound
    When It's Love--awesome
    Cabo Wabo--shorten to a 4 minute song.
    Source of Infection--real lyrics
Feels So Good--more guitar driven and a bit different sound on the keys
    Finish What Ya Started
    Black and Blue--tweak the lyrics
    Sucker--tweak the lyrics

I think you hit the nail on the head for me. Iíve always loved this album. But it was missing something. Itís always bugged me because with a little more work, it couldíve been the best VH album of that era. It has more potential, I think, than Balance.
You can tell with OU812 they were riding high on a wave. 5150 was super successful, and Eddie was confident, and free. He had a bunch of great ideas he wanted to flesh out. Then, they booked a huge stadium tour, and had to finish the album too quickly. Still love it, though!

I always go back to the Mine All Mine track from Tokyo 1989.

    That solo at 2:45

I still think that 0U812 is one of VH's most creative and diverse albums. The production could use an overhaul and some tweaking, yet the songs themselves, and the delivery, are top notch.

Like Sammy said much later on (2004) "It's a very special kind of music and you can't get it anywhere else..."
"There's too many people on this basketball that's floating around the sun, who are too afraid to allow themselves to FEEL" - Edward Van Halen
"Van Halen was never about the singer..." - a very wise fan.

That's a great rendition for sure.

One minor gripe. It sounds like the background vocals are either piped in or added in post production for this audio track. I'm almost 100% certain those are lifted directly from the album.
CNN may think my opinion matters, but you shouldn't.

I was listening to a remastered leak of OU812 (just sounded louder, to my ears).

"Black & Blue" actually has similar guitar tones to Diver Down.
There might be more chorus, but it's still pretty ratty & brown.
I still really enjoy the groove/guitar playing on that song.

Then i listened to part of FUCK, blech!

His tone is so processed & almost Vai-like with the solo in "Top of the world."
Never liked the look or sound of those EBMM's.
He just started to sound overly bright & processed to my ears.

I guess tastes change, so maybe that's what he was into.

That would have been a stark contrast. Balance, sonically, is the best VH album ever.

FUCK and 5150 have, by far, my least favorite guitar tones of his career. But, his live tone for the 5150 tour was waaay better than the album.

Yeah, the EBMM is probably the worst looking guitars he ever played, though guitar players seem to like the feel of them. But, as far as looks, the Wolfgangs are a much sleeker, cooler looking guitar.

OU812 still has my favorite guitar tone of the Hagar era. Just more raw and darker sounding than the other albums.

I like the tone on Balance above all Van Halen albums. I can't stand Eddie's tone now.

The tone on Judgement Day and TDIO is vintage Van Halen.

As far as the EBMM, well, what can I say. My drummer tried to talk me into trading it in for a Wolfgang which shows you what drummers know about guitars.

But it actually doesn't sound much different than the 5150 Kramer because that's what the bridge pickup was designed off of. Obviously the neck pickup is different as he never had one before.

Really any change in tone has a lot to do with the production and the amp. And I think the Humans Being tone is the best tone he ever got on record including VHI.
The only genre I really know is Van Halen.

    Exactly!
The EBMM is still pretty coveted and discerning players maintain that it's the best of Ed's signature guitars. They copied the bridge pickup, the digitized the neck, and the quality is second to none. Compared to all the QC issues that have plagued many Wolfgang and striped series models? Not even close...

And you're correct about the production aspect. Studio eqippment and outboard gear/mics/eq techniques etc. have a huge effect on the overall sound, and the mastering process can color it even further.

The Humans Being tone is the best of the Sam era, agreed. But, to me, not better than WACF, FW, VHII, VHI or 1984.

Oh yeah, I know the quality of the EBMM was excellent. But, just talking from purely an aesthetic point of view, it's the least appealing to my eyes of all his guitars over the years.

Yes Judgment Day and Dream Is Over sound awesome, not vintage, but awesome. You have to remember, I'm comparing Ed's myriad of tones to himself. Just because the FUCK tone is not one of my favorites of HIS, doesn't mean I don't like it. It's still better than most other people's tones. Of course some people think I don't like the Sam era, I guess because I actually want Dave to remain the singer and certainly don't want some dumbass "dual singer" fiasco. Stupid is as stupid does.
