Orioles open spring training with only 2 starting pitchers left from last year not that any of the other 3 were any good. No closer Britton out til July. Lame duck season for Machado and probably Showalter too. Can you say number one pick? Whats the over or under on 90 loses?

    Oscar was good RIP

SF Giant Pitchers and Catchers report today in ARZ. First workouts on Wed.

Still rumored to be after at least 1 more bullpen pitcher.

Andrew McCutchen was quite a hit at fanfest last Saturday. That is one good dude.

    Red face

I think Toronto should have just paid him the $400,000. They can afford it. I guess some insults to Stroman were said in arbitration. Now they have their young ace pitcher angry at the team to start the season.

Its not just 400k as this salary becomes the basis of future arb results. Saving 400k this year means millions over the course of the next few years. Love Stroman but he shouldn't have made that comment and he quickly walked it back.

Yeah, I think ROGERS Communications can handle a few million...lol... I sure wouldn't be worried about them...

also the Jays are not close to the $197 cap for the TAX. (They are at $156mil...give or take..) Most of it is all tied to over 30 year old guys like Donaldson, Martin, Tulo, Estrada, Happ and Morales.

Donaldson is GONE for sure after this year. Estrada and Happ most likely to.

It is a fine line. SF Giants haven't gone to Arbitration with a player in over 10 years. They paid Posey and Lincecum fair value when they hit Arb. They got lucky that Bumgarner took a under market long term deal early.

Toronto could have most likely split the difference and not even gone to the hearing in the first place.

They (TOR) have a hard enough time keeping players or signing new Free Agents. Probably don't want to burn bridges with your one good 20 year old core MLB player. Burning $$ is what they have done on to many older players.

Toronto is in Semi-Rebuild mode right now(especially if they deal Donaldson). Their real window of contention looks like it will be in a few years when Bichette and Guerrero Jr get to the show. You don't want Stromen leaving right then.

It is usually a bad idea to actually go to arbitration with a core player. It's always a tap dance to try not to alienate the player as you're arguing that he's not even worth a fraction of what he'll command on the open market in a few years. It's ultimately kind of a lose/lose situation for the team. They either lose the arbitration, or they "win" it but lose the player in doing so. As you just saw with his mistakenly honest tweet...

I don't believe in goodwill saving you a nickel down the road. They tried to get a deal done. They couldn't. So they filed. It's business. Stromam should understand that. If he's gonna take accountants making statistical comps personally then he shouldn't go to the hearing.

If only that's how it worked.

Easy for the org to say it's just business. Easy for the agent to say it's just business. Even easy for some players to say it's just business. But for most players, it's not. He may get over it, but it's just not a good idea for an org to piss off their players. They don't play as well when they don't like you.

Why do people (not necessarily you, Mike, I'm stepping back a bit) think that all of the rules of workplace performance and motivation don't apply just because these guys are athletes? They're still people. If they don't enjoy their work environment, they aren't going to perform their best. Generally speaking, if you don't like your employer, you don't do your job as well as you would for an employer you liked. That's been born out by a gazillion studies over the years, Gallup has millions of data points proving that.

And living in the Boston sports scene, we see that ALL the time with guys who can't hack it here.

It's not about goodwill saving anyone a nickel. It's about goodwill period.

Its a good thing you guys don't run teams with this "just give them whatever they want" is your arbitration strategy.

He didn't say that at all.

We were all saying that you negotiate further and more seriously BEFORE the hearing. Possibly meet close to half way of difference instead of even going to arbitration. Arbitration is all or nothing when they decide on the $ amount.

I even gave you an example of the SF Giants. Some teams just put different values to the arbitration process and rarely go to arbitration with core players that they intend to keep long term.
