Hard to say, but I don't think Ed is that type of player. I saw a clip a few years ago of George Lynch trading licks with Dokken's then new guitarist. The young gun was on fire and Lynch had his ass handed to him that night.

I don't think Ed wants or needs to be put in that situation.
Yngwie has always been jealous of Ed. Yes he is insanely fast. But talk about insecure pricks. Eddie created music and successfully operated in a band. Yngwie was left playing Eddie’s famous solos with little success within a band. He was on That Metal Show and my memory is he claimed he never practices and can pick up and play anytime without practice. He played some as part of his spot, and it looked to me all he’s really doing is playing scales as fast as he can. There has to be a lot to the reason he was never asked to play with known and successful bands.

For my money Vai blows away Yngwei and although he didn’t reach the success as Eddie,I have tons of respect for him. He had many chances to dump on Ed while playing with Dave. To my knowledge he’s never said a bad word about him. Why is it so many of these great guitarists from the 80’s who just rip apart the guitar never seemed to be able to make it work successfully in a band.

Eddie has more talent in his pinky than Yngwei. Not to mention have you not heard Starfleet? ( I think that’s what they called themselves.) Similar to G3, Eddie played with Brian May and others who escape me. Eddie shredded in that record. You can hear him break a string and keep going making 5 strings sound like 6.

Yngwie is the Claude Van Dam of Rock and Roll imo.

Vai himself has said that Yngwie outclasses him in terms of technique.
    Kind of humbling, coming from the Devil's guitar player in the movie Crossroads, and a guy that David Lee Roth once quipped to be 'better' than EVH;

"If you want to know who the baddest and the fastest is? You're just going to have to learn how to spell VAI, now..."

Yngwie blazes. He was doing lines on that G3 Denver dvd that Steve and Joe couldn't duplicate during the 'you play and then I'll try to copy you' segment. Then they resort to extreme wnammy dives and harmonic tricks that benefit from a Floyd bridge and locking nut, because Malmsteen didn't have that set up. Malmsteen smoked them IMO.

And Eddie, as great as he is and for all his acclaim, would be sucking his thumb
in the corner, rocking back and forth and possibly drooling if he were to play onstage with Yngwie - which he won't...

RRvh1, no disrespect, but the reason why most of us dismiss Yngwie is because he's been playing the SAME damn scale all these years - yup he's playing it really fast.
Not only that, but he's a terrible rhythm player, he mostly tries not play rhythm live.

Yngwie is fucking awesome. He had a great run of albums up until Fire & Ice.

Yngwie has never done it for me. I struggle to listen the whole way through one of his songs. Just never clicked with me.

There are different kinds of guitar shredding (yes, you can shred on the blues or jazz) and Ed is basically a great guitarist in the context of his band, but he'd stick out too much - perhaps not in a good way - onstage with Satch, Gilbert, Yngwie, Vai etc.
Wait, wasn’t this a joke. There is no base or dumb ass synth/guitar sound in the mix. I remember when this clip was posted.and being horrified until I thought the prankster confirmed it was a joke. I bit on that harder than a large mouth bass on a thre pronged worm hook...

My guess is if Ed is going to go out on tour, it's with Van Halen.
Maybe he's just not interested in a 'G3' type of thing.

Now this is cool. EVH shreds, but the overall structure of the song is preserved. Combining Cathedral, Hot for Teacher, Good Enough, and some other works just fine. The "song" flows.

While this one, IMO, is a one big mess, especially when they all start to play, check around 6:00 mark til the end.

    Now compare these two:

These are your words. In practically every single post you’ve made. As much as you bookend then with ‘Vai has said nice things about Ed’, ‘he’s still my favourite guitarist’ as well as attribute one of these passive-aggressive putdowns to DLR, the content is still there regardless so my question to you is:

what is Robbie’s true opinion of EVH as a guitar player? Forget legacy, historical impact, personal preference, sitting on the fence to appease the EVH diehards (and the fact you’d rather be Sambora than Eddie) and just tell me honestly: what your opinion of Ed and his ability bearing in mind his contemporaries?

This is a genuine, straight-up question and I hope you’ll indulge. I mean, it’s jumping off the page that Ed is second-rate to most of the 80s whizzkids - perhaps even third-rate - but I’d like to hear it straight rather than read between the lines and pick out the true meta. No judgement from me either, even though I find some of your comments eyebrow-raising, just genuinely curious especially considering how low you rate his prowess. Looking forward to a straight answer and not a political one.

True. And the same can be said of Vai and Satch sounding like themselves and playing the same old, same old, and not showing endless improve ideas but, like Ed, have their go to licks and signature sound.

False. YJM is impeccable in this regard. It may not stand out and he may forgo a lot live (I don't know, I've never seen him) but the man has it all.

Not saying Satch or Malmsteen aren't awesome but I really prefer solo shows by Satriani or Malmsteen, who can come up with a great show and great music. Like this one below, check the beginning of the show and live version of "Icarus suite" starting around 14:30.

Another good one, long DVD lesson by Malm:

Or Satriani videos, actually the best ones focus on the fretboard. I guess most camera guys and directors don't play guitar cause I have seen countless videos where during a guitar solo you are forced to watch a drummer, rhythm guitarist, or a singer drinking something. I think that Satriani's Live in Paris and Van Halen's RHRN are both perfect examples - first one with odd filters and not synchronized audio, VH video - bits and pieces cut up to make up a concert... AFAIAC "Satchurated" is rather good one. In teh case of VH, we are left with "LWAN". Hope they will release full version with "Wild Thing", "Good Enough", "YRGM" and others that didn't make the cut.

Now lining Michael Angelo Batio, Yngwie Malmsteen and Satch and wanting them to play Little Wing. Crazy.

I'd rather watch CC Deville than Yngwie.

That kind of wanking with no purpose to a song does nothing for me.

I get how guitarists like him, so I am not saying I don't understand, I just don't agree.
