Las Vegas Security Guard Raises New Questions About Shooting

As questions spiral about a significant shift in the timeline of the Las Vegas shooting, a security guard stands in the middle of the controversy: Jesus Campos.

At first, Campos, a guard at the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino, was hailed a hero for helping guide police to gunman Stephen Paddock's room on the 32nd floor. Police said Campos was shot in the leg at the end of Paddock's assault on concertgoers—potentially distracting the gunman and causing him to panic and kill himself.

But now, questions have been raised after Clark County Sheriff Joe Lombardo revised the timeline and said Campos had actually been shot about 9:59 p.m.—a full six minutes before the mass shooting began at 10:05 p.m.—which means the guard could have instead led Paddock to start opening fire on the crowd for fear of being caught.

Police have said it was difficult to identify the source of the bullets during the attack, and the confusion added more minutes to their lengthy response. But the revised timeline shows officers would have known where Paddock was before the mass shooting even started.

Did Campos call 911? What happened during those six minutes?

Much of Campos's story and background remains a mystery.

Campos's co-worker Liliana Rodriguez started a GoFundMe account for him on October 3, explaining that he'd been shot while on "random patrol" and it could have been "anyone of us."

"Funds will be used to provide relief and financial support for him while he gets back on his feet," Rodriguez's online petition says. "This is a young man that I work with day in and day out. Any financial support would be appreciated for the time he would need to recover."

A picture of Campos wasn't displayed as part of the fund because Rodriguez indicated that "due to privacy from the media we do not feel comfortable publishing a photo."

During a brief phone conversation with ABC News, Campos said, "I'm fine...I was just doing my job."

Calls and text messages to Campos, Rodriguez and others who might know him were not immediately returned.

On Tuesday, Las Vegas Metro Police Undersheriff Kevin McMahill explained more about Campos's actions the night of the shooting, helping fill in some of what happened ahead of the attack.

He told KNPR, a local NPR affiliate, that Campos went up to the 32nd floor to investigate a door alarm. While on the 32nd floor, he found that a stairwell door was jammed and radioed down to maintenance.

Campos heard a drilling sound and thought it was odd. A maintenance worker came up to the 32nd floor. As the pair started talking, Paddock began firing through the door of his room, first with a single-fire gun and then with a rapid-fire rifle.

Police have said that when Campos radioed what happened, it helped them track where Paddock was holed up. McMahill didn’t elaborate on the six minutes or why police found it difficult to locate Paddock when, according to the new timeline, they had his location minutes before the assault started.

“I understand why people are frustrated with this because we are as well,” McMahill told KNPR.

That at least gives some explanation on why they were outside his room in the first place. They probably heard him prepping with the drilling noises and were getting ready to knock. With the cameras outside, the dude freaked and shot through the door.

It will be interesting to hear the explanation for all of this. I'm not ready to jump down anyone's throats on how they handled this until all of the facts are in. We've already seen the story changing a couple of times.

Regardless of the timeline, I say be thankful that the guy off’ed himself when he did. It could’ve been a lot worse and I say that with respect to those that were killed/injured.

This Trip Advisor Fire Exit plaque photo from one of the rooms in the hotel shows how close to the shooter's room that anyone would be if they accessed the stairwell in that "arm" of the hotel. Was the stairwell door that Campos found jammed in the section of the "arm" that the shooter was in? I don't know.

As best as I can tell the shooter had a room in the North arm on the East side.

We're all waiting for a detailed timeline from Campos and the engineer, and to put all of that together to try and get a realistic timeline.

BTY, the room outline drawings of each arm are generic, in that each hallway door that faced each other was recessed from the hallway. So that gives you cover from some crazy person at the end of the hallway shooting down the hallway.

(Levels 40-42 (numbered as floors 60–62) are designed as penthouse suites.)

The Al-Qaeda affiliated Al-Shabab in Somalia has reminded all of us what "Big League" Islamic Terrorism look like.

Death toll rises to 276 in Somalia truck bomb attack

    https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/...ack/765819001/

The death toll from the single deadliest attack in Somalia's history rose to 276 Sunday as emergency workers feverishly dug through the rubble of a Mogadishu bomb blast that collapsed buildings and set nearby cars ablaze.

About 300 people were injured when the truck explosion rocked a crowded shopping district Saturday.

Obviously a good thing that Paddock is dead, before the explosive compounds he had waiting in that vehicle were unleashed in some manner.

Where's the outrage and the demands to "do something?" What about the rights of the pedestrians and cyclists? Why are we not demanding more regulation about who can own a smartphone?

    https://www.bloomberg.com/news/artic...ody-s-counting

I can't stand it when I see some asshole driving down the road obviously texting and not paying attention to what he's doing as he swerves in and out of his lane. Pisses me the fuck off. But I'm not going to lobby my legislature or start some campaign to try to pass more laws regarding cell phone use in vehicles because there is no point. They are for the most part unenforceable. If someone is hell bent on texting and driving, they're going to text and drive regardless of what kind of laws are on the books. Sound familiar?

This is the problem with the idea that we can legislate these things away. You can't. You can make something illegal all you want, it doesn't stop people from doing it. We have laws against murder, theft, drugs, assault, weapons, distracted driving, drunk driving, etc and yet people still do these things on a daily basis.

Passing a law cannot preemptively prevent a tragedy. What a law can do however is to punish someone for violating it after the fact. So while I don't support gun control laws, and I'm not running to my representative to put texting and driving laws into place, I do support harsh sentences for those who cause harm while using a firearm or driving while texting. Instead of trying to ban things on the front end which is proven to be ineffective, perhaps stiffening penalties in the back end will make some people think twice before they decide to use a firearm or text while they're driving. And if they don't, at least they get locked up for a long time so they can't do it again.
I don't always listen to hard rock, but when I do, I prefer Van Halen. Stay Frosty my friends.

Actually Im surprised that Apple added Do Not Disturb While Driving in iOS11 as a user option. Im sure they receive their fair share of negative input regarding texting or even phone calls while driving and they SHOULD do something about it if they can!

The solution I hear much of the time is that the phone should automatically disable when its GPS detects that it is going faster than 5 MPH.

The argument against that it that it penalizes passengers who have nothing to do with the driving of the vehicle.

    Sound familiar?

Yup! People just need to stop being a self-serving asshole and think about others for a change! Would solve a lot of problems including more legislation!

Default Mass shooting in Las Vegas

Imagine if you tried to take everyone's phone away. There's more people texting in the car than there are mass murders running around with guns that's for sure.

We had a girl in our county who was texting while driving and she hit and killed a bicyclist on the right side as she drifted over, and then over corrected and went into the oncoming lane and killed a motorcyclist coming the opposite direction. She of course was fine. She got all of five months in county that's it.

If the penalty is severe enough it can be as effective as a ban.
