Default I Ain't Talkin' 'Bout Love

So I tried a different approach with this one and played along with the studio recording that had the guitar track removed. I dunno, it's okay I guess. I think it doesn't sound right with my guitar on it instead of Ed's so it sounds funny to me.

Here's one I did a while back with the way I had been recording them by just sticking my phone straight on the speaker grille:

Which method do you guys think is better? It's not like I'm trying to be a pro or anything, just like to share my playing with friends and family from time to time. I don't have fancy recording equipment so these are pretty much my two options.

I guess the third would be to stop doing them so I don't turn into brettbrettify. LOL!
The only genre I really know is Van Halen.

I like the second one the best.

You do a good job with the main riff. I've seen a lot of people play it without muting the strings enough or something.

    Thanks.

Yeah, if you don't get a good mute and let the strings ring out it doesn't sound right.

    Sounds good!

I do think you need to work on your "guitar face".

Yeah, well they're better players than I am so I have to really concentrate on what I'm doing otherwise I'll make more mistakes!

I do watch it back though and think "Damn, why so serious?" I've got pictures and video from back in my gigging days and I don't look like that. Of course those were all after a few beers in too so there's that...

You prick!!! I had a set amount of time to eat and have a shower before leaving for the cottage for two days... Haha.

Obviously kidding. I enjoyed both versions. Love that riff, and feel it's one of Ed's most memorable and fun to play. Great job.

I don't know I like them both, I like the audience on the first one. They're like "wtf please stop!" Haha.

You do a nice job muting the riff as has been said. A lot of players take that for granted. The rest you played very clean. I like them with backing tracks that's me, but I also like to do them not with the original songs so I don't have to compare myself.

I only make stupid camera faces on songs that are fairly easy to play. If you notice on the Van Halen and Metallica songs I just did I made a lot less faces to make sure I got them right. It's hard to play up to a camera you kinda have to pretend you're playing to an audience.

And there's only one brettbrettify my friend, the rest of us just pale in comparison.

    But nice job dude!

    Thanks man!

Yeah, I started playing and turned around and there they were. I thought they were downstairs.

That's a good point about the backing track not being the original recording. We're so used to hearing them that it's going to sound weird and there's no way not to compare what we played because the only thing that changed was the guitarist. I might try giving one of the "generics" a try and see if it isn't quite as jarring.

BTW, your Sad But True vid inspired me to try the backing track because I thought it sounded damn good. You nailed the tone and the playing was clean as always. I wish I knew how to record better because I think it's cool that you do the overdubs and stuff with multiple guitars. Really makes it sound like it is supposed to.

And yeah, mugging for a camera is just odd to me. You're exactly right, you have to pretend that you're playing to an audience. I guess in a way you are, just not one that's right there in front of you.

Whichever format has your kids in the background questioning whether they should interrupt you or not. That's the format you should go with.

For real though, I like backing tracks. If my family is home I try not to practice without a backing track or looping a chord progression because they can't hear what I hear in my head. Without context it probably sounds like nonsense to them. But let's be honest a lot of it is nonsense anyways.

If I played..I would prefer the original track minus the guitar.

Only because in my mind it would make me feel like I'm young Ed in his prime.

I think it elevates your playing as well imo. To try and get it as close as possible just for personal satisfaction.

For me a lot of the fun is trying to make the final mix and stuff sound good, the playing is almost secondary. It's like an excuse to learn to mix and make things sound better. But since I'm using a backing track, I figure the fun is to try to get it to sound like the original. I sit and critique the sound more than my actual playing. I get enough time to do my own stuff in my band and do covers our way. And I've actually found that working on these covers so intently to get them right has helped my playing overall actually even after all these years. I've had to be a lot more disciplined in my approach.

It's really not hard. I'm no recording engineer so much of it is just trial and error.
