Came close to putting Randy Rhoads in there...just missed the cut.

Hmmm, I guess EVH and Page are the only automatics for me.

After that I have a bunch of favorites I enjoy: Hendrix, Townshend, Beck, Tommy Bolin, Vito Bratta, Nuno, Warren DeMartini, Jake E Lee, Vai, Buddy Guy, Albert King, Albert Collins, Billy Gibbons, Cream and Blind Faith era Clapton, Adam Jones, and Billy Gibbons.

Much easier for me to make my Mt Rushmore of drumming:

    Alex
    Buddy Rich
    Billy Cobham
    Louie Bellson

Oh, also forgot about Andy Summers. Listening to my Message In A Box Police boxset the last week reminded me of how underrated and an interesting player he is.

Sure enough! I see a new topic here! YouTube has turned this whole discussion upside down. There are people we have sentimentality for because we bought their cassettes when we were 14, but now we know there are guys playing in basements and bedrooms who blow our minds!

    PERSONAL FAVORITES:

    EVH
Jimmy Page - more for songwriting and producing than solos
Pete Townshend - I can hum so many of his live solos
...a fourth doesn't even really come to mind. Just realized I'm more into bands than guitar players

    GENUINE BESTS OF ALL TIME:

    Guthrie Govan
    Paul Gilbert
    Yngwie Malmsteen
    Shawn Lane
    Chet Atkins
    Danny Gatton
    Brent Mason
    Johnny Hiland
    Clint Strong
    George Benson
    Django Reinhardt

If I used that model it would be

    EVH
    Hendrix

AFD is the album that really got me into guitar driven hard rock. I had that on cassette. Then like the second or third cd I ever bought was LZ IV.

I didn't become a real certified Ed maniac until 91-92 and the FUCK era.
The only genre I really know is Van Halen.

I know 9 out of the 11 names you posted after your favorite players.
Can't believe I forgot Paul Gilbert! But still, those guys ARE famous to a degree, and have been in the various guitar magazines and clinics etc.

Then again, in any "list" thread it's hard to whittle SO MANY choices down to just a few... IMO.

AFD was and is a great album, and Slash is a cool player. Certainly no slouch!
I love his solo album that he did with Ozzy, Lemmy, Myles, Kid Rock, etc. Good songwriting and some great chops in his soloing. He's very versatile.

And '91-'93 was a great time to be a Van Halen fan!

One important distinction to make...who I think goes on the Mount Rushmore of Guitarists ≠ my favorite guitarists. I'm trying to be objective over who has had the most impact on music and the instrument. If I was allowed more players I'd probably put B.B. King, Chet Atkins, and The Edge on there.

Then it gets hard if talking top 4, probably Page.
So many others I like not in the genre, Chet Atkins, Roy Clark, etc
    Dealing with it.

You know who I really like as a drummer? The dude from the Steve Miller Band. Man, he just lays down a groove. And I don't even know his fucking name. LOL!
