As to complete nonsense, just see the lyrics for Romeo Delight, which is one of the most kick-ass VH tunes (IMO)

I told her never in hell, no special reason
    Must 'a lied 'cause I ain't leavin'
We're in for a very long night
Heard a vicious rumor from your Mamma's tongue
You're a desperate woman, need a man with a gun
High crime zone in the city of lights

    Wanna see my ID?
    Try to clip my wings
Don't have to show you proof of anything
    I know the law, friend
At the eleventh hour I'm goin' back outside, umm
Give it a try, I'm your last loose end

Not a lick of that makes sense, but it's awesome. And when you continually write lyrics like that, you have a pattern and if folks like it they will start to perceive it as great. It's not, lyrically. But it works for VH songs.
Well said. Listening to Van Halen for the lyrics is like watching the Miss Universe Pageant for the talent competition.
"It's so lonely at the top because it's so crowded at the bottom" - Diamond David Lee Roth

"If at first you don't succeed, then skydiving is not for you"

Yep, and honestly....that's the only reason it's in there. There's no intellectual undertone or hidden meaning to Dave's lyrics....it's just random phrases he sits around and comes up with so he can use them in conversations and songs.

He was saying "HoneyBabySweetieDoll" to people 25 years ago. Finally used it in a song on ADKOT. That's what he does...comes up with stuff like this.

And it works for VH...just don't look for subtleties...they aren't there.
I asked a ref if he could give me a technical foul for thinking bad things about him. He said, of course not. I said, well, I think you stink. And he gave me a technical. You can't trust em. -

I would say none of us on here knows exactly what is in Dave's mind when he writes his lyrics. So I'll agree to disagree here.

yes it's awesome... which sorta implies it's great, if the goal is to be awesome Of course there's no deep meaning to the songs. Go listen to U2 or Springsteen for that.

He'd paste together cool phrases a lot and might be hard to figure out WTF he was talking about. Creative use of words and language made it interesting. Sorta like EVH put together cool guitar riffs and music in a creative way.

HBSD... yeah it was a phrase laying around for years. So was EWS.

You can get a headache trying to figure out the mind of DLR.

Worst : How Many Say I. Really?

Favorite: To many to list. However, I really don't care about their lyrics. If I'm in the mood for good lyrics I'll put in Rush or Pink Floyd. VH is about guitar, drums, and melody, IMO

Dave even made this same point. Lyrics don't need to make sense if they fit the song. And yea, most of Roth ERA lyrics do not make a lick of sense. Butt they work for me just fine.
