Default Gravers: Post Your Favorite Sammy Tune. Red Heads: Post Your Favorite Roth Tune.

On a scale of Rothtard to Cabo Wabo Investor where are you on the Dave vs. Sammy Spectrum? Which vocalist do you prefer? Now post up your favorite song of the *opposite* vocalist and tell us why it's your favorite.

No cop outs by choosing instrumentals or gag tunes. Give us a legitimate VH song led by your non-preferred singer between Roth and Hagar. Let's leave Cherone out of this.

I'm fairly neutral when it comes to Roth vs. Hagar. I think the music has more attitude with Roth while the songwriting (but not necessarily lyrics) and technical aspects of singing were stronger with Hagar. But if I had to pick one I'd pick Roth. So, my favorite Hagar led tune would probably be...

Amsterdam. It may not be Sammy's strongest offering lyrically, but the melodies are still fun and Ed's riffs are crushing in this tune.

It's a toss up for me between this ...

    And this ...

"It's so lonely at the top because it's so crowded at the bottom" - Diamond David Lee Roth

"The truth sounds like hate to those who hate the truth" - Todd Wagner

"Women and Children First ... The REAL Van Halen III"

I lean towards Dave, and my favorite Sam era track is Amsterdam or 5150. Summer Nights is right there too.

    Nice topic.

    I guess I'm a "Roth guy" but like you I'm not anti-Sam.

For me it's Runaround. I like the riff. The chorus is kind of anthemic. And it's actually the song that got me into Van Halen my sophomore year in high school. Heard it on the radio and saw the video and bought the album. Once that happened I started buying the back catalog and here I am almost 30 years later on a messageboard. Weird.
The only genre I really know is Van Halen.

My favorite Sam era tune? Tough call between "5150", The Dream Is Over, and Humans Being I would probably say.

I remember when FUCK came out the last week of my junior year in HS, and I was playing the shit out of it that summer, and my Mum said to me one day when I was out in the driveway practicing hoops and it was playing that Runaround was her favorite tune on the new album.

Musically, it's terrific, and I really like Sam's vocals during the verses, I'm just not a big fan of the "round and round" catchy chorus.

I actually like Sam's vocal where he sings "here we go around..." He's not straining but he's got some good grit there.

Yeah, it was May or June and I distinctly remember talking with a friend of mine about how cool that Runaround song was. I was underwhelmed by Poundcake and I remember wondering why MTV was making such a big deal about it. At that time I was a big Guns N' Roses fan so Van Halen wasn't really on my radar. Runaround really changed that dynamic for me.

Oh no, I don't think Sam is straining on that song at all. What I actually don't like about the chorus is the backing vocals where Ed and Mike repeat, "round and round and round". For me, it's just a bit irritating, although I understand it is catchy.

Ha, I remember the day the local radio stations debuted Poundcake. All my friends and I were trying to figure out what the hell Ed was doing on the intro. Of course, this was before the video hit MTV. I like Poundcake a little bit better than Runaround, but from day one The Dream Is Over and Pleasure Dome were my favs on that album.

I thought the video was cool on the big rotating stage. Al was kind of a shirtless bad as to my 15 year old little brain.
