Guess which two VH albums made this list?

[h=1978 - Van Halen, 'Van Halen']2[/h] Van Halen's self-titled debut gets the nod over other classic albums from 1978 (like Bruce Springsteen's 'Darkness on the Edge of Town,' for starters) because it changed the entire way hard-rock music was presented going forward. Eddie Van Halen's guitar pyrotechnics are the highlight, but the rhythm section's chest-pounding attack set the stage for '80s rock 'n' roll.

[h=2012 - Van Halen, 'A Different Kind of Truth']2[/h]Van Halen returned to some previously unreleased scraps of songs from their glory days with David Lee Roth on this sturdy reunion project. Some of the material required more than one listen to completely absorb, and an absent Michael Anthony's cloud-bursting tenor was missed at times. But 'A Different Kind of Truth' had a way of burrowing in.

Two things that wouldve made ADKOT miles better IMO, using 1978 guitar tone instead of the shit he decided to use, and Mikey on lead vocals. With all due respect to Dave, he can't sing anymore. I know for a fact by listening to Chickenfoot's brand new song that Mike still has his voice, and after listening to the III live version of Somebody Get Me A Doctor I am convinced that he was the best singer VH ever had. Also some of Dave's lyrics are just to cheesy for me (1-800-TEXT ME Baby, Spinning up my Facebook page...)

I totally agree with you regarding Eddie's 1978 guitar, but Mike on lead vocals? No. Mike on background vocals? Yes.

There is a reason Mike isn't a lead vocalist. I love Mike, but c'mon. Dave sounds fine on ADKOT.

When in doubt, just put on a Tom Petty album and then come back to Van Halen, makes DLR sound like Pavarotti.
If I don't respond to you it means I have you on ignore, which means you are a douchenozzle.

Emperor Brett - "I can't believe you guys are analyzing song-by-song Van Halen III? What next, analyzing the script of Stroker Ace looking for some shred of Citizen Kane?"

David Lee Roth did the impossible. He made Van Halen better. Deal with it!

Do you think Tom Petty listened to some Bob Dylan and Byrds growing up?

    Lol

Seems pretty evident from the Van Halen Rising book...the endless Singer debates that DLR never had the ability to sing.

It is a fuckin' stupid thing to say.
"He has a swaggering retro machismo that will give hives to the Steinem cabal" -Camille Paglia on Donald Trump

"But, fucking with Brook is like fucking with hot shit on and ax handle. You just don't get a grip"-track5

"Make way for the bad guy"- Tony Montana

'This hamburger don't need no helper"- David Lee Roth

"I wish Bon Jovi would've given me a call before he recorded all of his hits, because the lyrics would've been smarter, the melodies would've been much more smashing, and they would've sold a lot fewer records." -David Lee Roth

"My beef is people thinking Bon Jovi is good cuz they sold lots of records to housewives." -tango

"But being number one doesn’t really mean jack fuck all. We sold twice as many records as other records that year (1984) that landed in the Number One position." ~Eddie Van Halen

I realize these lists only exist to generate arguments, but seriously, too much Springsteen, Petty, and Dylan. Actually, for me, 1 album would be too much Springsteen. And not nearly enough Zeppelin. They ruled the 70s.

Yeah, but to me it's much more a matter of mastering than anything. And it's done on purpose. For those who followed my conversation on the rumor thread about professional live dvds, remember the multiple people said they don't have time for that because they just watch youtube on their 2" computer speakers or listen and watch on their phones with earbuds? Well, that's now why everything is mastered where everything is slammed to 11. It's to compensate for how people listen to music these days. Everything's louder than everything else. Expecting 70s dynamics and space is pure fantasy these days. Which sucks for me but I've just accepted it.....

It goes beyond the earbud/headphone-friendly listeners these days.

Even low to mid-level stereo/home theater speakers are crap. They're all high and mid-range biased with itty bitty woofers. You need to buy a separate sub-woofer to get the kind of bass you used to be able to get in a typical 3-way stereo speaker that would have a 10"-12+" woofer. You walk into one of those Best Buy Magnolia centers and look at their priciest speakers and none of them have anything bigger'n a 8 (or maybe 10 if you're lucky) inch woofer on even the most expensive so-called full range speaker. And most consumer receivers are just as bad, with hardly enough power to effectively run anything bigger than a group of shitty little desktop speakers.

Music mastering and hardware for the average consumer has actually gone backwards the past 20 years. You have to invest tens of thousands of dollars to get the kind of quality listening experience that was obtainable at a fraction of that cost a few decades ago.

Springsteen should never be in any top 10, top 20....top 1000 music lists.

Did I just read Michael Anthony was the best singer VH ever had? And DLR's lyrics are all cheesy?

Guess after years and years and years of trolling this place reading countless sammy vs. Dave threads and comments, that the obvious seems to have alluded us all. Mikey is the best lead singer VH ever had. Somebody get me a doctor!
