    Default Could use a little help with Floyd setup (pictures included)

    I'm stumped on this one. I recently switched from 10-46 strings to 10-52 and apparently it's made a bigger difference in my setup than I would have thought. Basically I can't get it tuned properly because I'm out of room inside the cavity to adjust the springs. I'm all the way up to the wall but still coming in a hair flat when tuning to to standard. The Floyd is parallel with the body and the action is perfect.

    I'm guessing the first suggestion is to add a third spring. Well I did that and it did of course bring the claw away from the wall but the trade off is that the bar was hard as a rock to push down. Just not playable at the severe stiffness that it had. So I took the 3rd spring out again and this is where I'm at.


    I hope I'm just having a brain fart and it's an obvious solution but I'm not seeing it. Any ideas?

    I would've said add the 3rd spring and keep tweaking the tension with the claw screws.

    Maybe even try different springs, as they can have varying degrees of stiffness and 'give' to them.

    Is that trem setter flush against the block?
    Possibly adjust it a quarter turn or two, with affecting the action too much?

    My initial recommendation would be to add a third spring and relieve some tension by backing that claw back out.

    If you want to stick with 2 springs you can just take the 2 you have and turn them in to a \_/ shape. Move the top ends of the strings in one space. That'll keep you at two springs and increase tension. And if even that is too much for you then try backing the claw out a bit.

    Personally I use 3 springs and a fair amount of tension on all my flush Floyd like that. I hate the bridge lifting and the other strings going flat during a bend, so I'll tighten the claw until I can bend a whole step on the B and G strings around the 12th fret without the rest of the guitar going significantly flat. I find reaching target pitches on bends to be much easier now, especially unison bends.

    3 things out of curiosity;

    - What guitar is this?
    - That bridge pickup looks really close to the strings!
    - The ground wire on your claw, held in place by the screw, or underneath?

    It's a Wolf Special. The action is great...no issues with the pickup being in the way. The ground wire looks like it's being held by the screw but it's not. It's sitting loose.


    Jedi - That's interesting. I wouldn't think the springs being straight up the wall or angled to the center would make any difference at all. I'm not following what this means - "Move the top ends of the strings in one space".

    Excuse the crude drawing, but this is what I mean. Moving the springs in one space will increase their length and thus their tension, counterbalancing the increased tension your new string gauge is providing.

    Annnnnd I just noticed my last post had a string/spring typo. My bad. Hopefully this clears it up.

    Ideally, you want just a little more spring tension, versus the string tension, including your typical fretted bends, all the time trying to keep the spring tension at just enough to keep the bridge plate from lifting up.
    Usually, it takes 2 springs, real tight, or 3 springs, a bit looser.
    It should be closer to a balance, with favor toward the spring side, to keep the plate down.
    That should keep it from being too hard to push the bar down.

    BTW, it kinda looks like your ground wire is pinched under the claw screw.

    Can't believe it but that minor adjustment of moving the springs inward seems to have made the difference. It's all tuned up and staying in tune when I beat the hell out of the whammy so I'm cautiously gonna say I'm good to go. The claw is close to the wall but there's a little room. And the bar isn't nearly as stiff as it was when I had three springs. I knew I could count on you, Jedi.

    I have 2 springs like Jedi shows, then another in the middle on my 10-52 strung guitar. Then I had to back the claw screws out to get it usable. It's still firmer than my other 2 that have only 2 springs, but only takes a second to get used to.

    Dude it was like cement it was so stiff. There was no getting used to it.

    I see these guys on YouTube with the bars like rubber bands....using like one finger to get a full dive and I have no idea how they do it.

    Yeah, mine was rock hard until I backed the screws out.

    I know what you mean about really light arms. I've played some full floating trems that are like that. I've been tempted to get my Wolfgang rear routed to make it full floating.
