    Default MXR Carbon Copy

    Hey Guys,

Score! Wife was at an estate sale and texted me a pic of a like new MXR CC in a box; got it dirt cheap as I immediately told her to pick it up.

Anyway; in front or in the loop? Also; anyone have experience with settings for some nice delay that is on all the time and of course more advanced things like Cathedral?

In front for Van Halen. Pete Thorn has an excellent instructional video on how to use a delay in front of the amp for Van Halen sounds specifically:

The delay on "Cathedral" is far from advanced. It is simply one quick repeat that is as loud as the fundamental note. Tempo wise, just listen to the record for exactly how short to set the delay time. Basically, you want a "bonk-bonk" sound when you play a single staccato note. One note becomes two. This short delay is present on MANY Van Halen recordings and live performances.

    That's a great video, garbeaj!
I'm a fan of Pete's for sure, but hadn't seen that clip before. Thanks for posting.

I had a Carbon Copy for a couple years, and found it way too dark. Eventually, I just couldn't stand it anymore. I got rid of it, and moved my Memory Toy to after my Flanger and Phase 90, and put a vintage Peavey digital delay in the loop, where I had the EHX MT.
Meanwhile, the CC Bright came out, and the demos sounded nice, but I passed, because I heard the EP103 was coming out.
I haven't got it yet, but it is on my short list.
I'm fairly certain the EP103 is actually digital, but virtually replicates an analog voice.
With a max of 4 second delay, it would need like 12 BBD chips in there!

The blue LED on the CC was pretty cool, though.

The EP103 is a digital model of several vintage EP-3s. I just got a great deal on one, along with the Echoplex pre-amp. They should arrive on Wednesday.

Here is a great explanation of the EP-103 from Dunlop:

What amp ? If you`re getting your dirt from the amp put it in the loop . I use my CC in the loop of my Splawn , also in the loop of a Freidman and 5150 50 watt when I had them , works really good . As far as Cathedral , sorry I haven`t a clue

51501984 brought up a good point.
If you put it in front, and find a nice setting for the gain channel, then switch to the amp's clean channel, you probably won't hear the delay. Why?...IDK.
Generally, if it's in the loop, it's level is more consistent. It really depends on your situation, so you should try it both ways.
I have a reverb and a delay in the loop, which I can always count on hearing, whether the amp is clean or gained out.
But then I have another delay in front, when I want to kick it in the guts.
    In regards to the original post;
This is an older set up I had. The RV5 and CC were in the loop, and the EHX MT is at the end of my front pedals.
You can see how I set my old CC.

For Cathedral, the Mix should be high, and the Delay timing you'll just have to feel out.
Regen (feedback), is usually null to very low, for Edward stuff.

Long ago, most delay pedals had a level control, that just cranked the effect up, higher and higher, and you could be even, or go past your dry signal level, and that was cool.
Nowadays, they have a mix or blend control, which maxes out about noon, then starts bringing down the dry signal, which I find to be a total PITA.
Personally, I didn't like my CC because of the dark, muffled repeats, and that freaky mix control.

But the blue LED was cool, LOL!

I have the new MXR Echoplex delay. I'm not experienced with tape delay. But after two times trying it I like it. Of course it's in front of the amp. My only complaint so far is the knobs are super sensitive. A little turn makes a big difference. And mine won't do one repeat only. Slap back style. There's another half a note decay repeat that may or may not be true to the old tape machines.

CC I'd put in the loop. I use delay that way instead of reverb. Sounds better to me.
VH III is Ed's solo album. So everybody who keeps saying they wish he'd do one needs to stfu and listen to III. Then stfu again.

I've noticed, on some of my delays, if I got it loud, that the guitar sometimes picks up that single (last) repeat, and repeats it one more time, somewhat faintly.
But then again, I also have never had a real tape delay, so I'm not sure if that's a characteristic trait, or not, that your EP 103 may be digitally mimicking.

I have the 5150III 1x12 combo; currently I have a DD7 in front but am not completely satisfied..plus; as mentioned my wife picked this up for $25 at an estate sale! Anyway; I have my flange and chorus in the loop while the rest of the effects (phaser, wah, delay, and blues driver (for ch1 only) in front. I currently am in love with Ch2 and have some nice dialed in settings for evh tone per experimentation and good recommendations from everyone here in the forums.

I can not get to my CC to post my basic setting. I seem to remember regeneration at 11 oclock mix at 11 oclock and delay around 1 oclock.
After watching the Pete Thorn video, I just ordered the MXR Echoplex pedal from Sweetwater. Today is last day for 48 month financing. It will cost 5 bucks a month. Lol

I actually run the DD7 and CC together to Eddie's spaceship noises and his FR to the body sounds before Cathedral.

    25 bucks!?

You're all set. Try the DD7 in the loop, and the EP103 in front, just before the amp, maybe.
You should have full delay coverage then.
Usually, if the delay is in the front, and is set nice for the gain channel, switching to clean channel, it will drop out.
Vice versa, if it's set nice for the clean channel, in front that is, when you switch to the gain channel, the delay goes berserk, and it's too much.
With a delay in front for the gain channel, and the DD in the loop for clean, you can't go wrong.

I am wondering how many EP103s are gonna sell now, because of the OPs CC post, LOL!
I'm really close to getting one myself.
Maybe if we wait a little longer, they'll put the EP 101 and EP 103 together in one box.
If they don't, I would have to say that was marketing genius.
