But you could also see that it was deflating for ed to see the place not full. You can't tell it really hurt him. As much of a blast as it was being portrayed on stage, you know it was killing him.
Funny how Gary's status as "a brother" unraveled as attendance fell ...

And it ends up with crickets and nearly empty shows despite all of the energy and hype.

Thus 1998 through basically now where the output is minimal, he more or less complains that he can't do anything outside of what fans expect, and as far as the general public can tell, his creativity (or desire to be) has vanished.

It's a shame, but Eddie clearly has a fragile ego, and despite all of the acclaim that he's had over his life (more than anyone could hope for in one lifetime), he's still astonishingly insecure. Perhaps he always has been which is what drove him to be so creative and competitive, but then one day around 1997-98 he lost the will to fight for the throne.

I also don't think this was a sudden shift either. Clearly from about the late 80's on, he wanted to move further and further away from the "guitar hero" status where he was always innovating new licks and pushing the boundaries. By the mid 90's he was relying on the same licks and techniques that got him there and was just rearranging them for different songs. When you're bag of tricks is as large as Eddie's it's easy to mask, but for those that really pay attention to his playing it's definitely noticeable.
Good post. The commercial failure of VH III almost assuredly caused Ed to "take his guitar and grand piano and go home". One dud after TEN STRAIGHT DOUBLE PLATINUM ALBUMS is nothing to be ashamed of. Come on, Ed! Give us that follow up to ADKOT!! We're ready!!!

Some artists release albums that are not well-received. AC/DC had 3 straight albums "only" sell platinum (Flick of the Switch, Fly on the Wall and Blow Up Your Video) after the massively successful Back in Black (more than 22 million).

EVH found out that straying too far outside of the successful VH formula, with a 3rd singer did not prove to be a move in the right direction.

Van Halen and AC/DC managed to strike lightning twice with two different singers. Three times was a too much to hope for.

By Grand Rapids, the shine was off the apple, as Fudd said. I remember the band had a ton of energy and played great .. but the crowd was pretty tame about the whole thing. At the end of the show, when they all grab hands for a bow together, I specifically recall Ed putting a cigarette into his mouth and at the same time, shaking his head at us. We weren't very loud at that moment and I think Ed then starts to pump his fist trying to get us going. It's weird, but that whole 'shaking his head at us' thing stands out for me. Eddie Van Halen seemed to be disappointed .. at us.
Thankfully at the Louisville show in 2004 Eddie was so out of it he didn't give us the head shake. I was right in front of him and the arena was 3/4 ths empty, I suppose if he was coherent and had a gun at that show he might have taken a few people out.

I saw the III tour in Nashville and the place was probably 3/4 th full and the band was on fire.

I think III could have possibly been successful had a few things been tweaked. The records has a good starting base with some excellent music/songs.

    1. Involve Michael Anthony in ALL the Bass playing and more backing vocals.
    2. Tell Mike Post to piss off
    3. Neworld / without you is good beginning
    4. One I Want needs better lyrics
    3. From afar is ok
    4. Fire in the Hole needs better production
    5. Year to the day is great
    6. Maybe Josephina acoustic?
    7. Once is ok
    8. Drop HMSI for a completed TWILY and use that as the second single.

Didn't Gary recently(within a few years recent) say when he was there Mike played the bass? I'm pretty sure he did.

III is Ed's ego gone wild. And you can't blame him. After Roth no one gave the band a shot. Eveyone bailed on them. From the producer to Ed's own guitar tech. Then the success they had with Hagar. It's easy to see Ed say hey, I did it before and no one thought I could. I can do it again. Wrong!

VH III is Ed's solo album. So everybody who keeps saying they wish he'd do one needs to stfu and listen to III. Then stfu again.

I heard that Mike played bass on That's Why I Love You, which was never released.

Also I think I remember hearing that Eddie played drums on one or two songs?

Post is actually a good producer (he produced for Dolly Parton, Kenny Rogers). I heard the only reason that that annoying hum/hiss is in the background of some songs is that they were the first songs written by Ed and Gary, and that they were recorded by a standard tape recorder, and Post did the best he could with that day's technology to get rid of it.

The other day, I fixed everything I could here -- an hour on a free audio editing software. No more hiss, clearer, more bass. Added and remastered TWILY.

Biggest, most obvious difference is at 5:15, and when the guitar comes in for Fire in the Hole. Hope you like it.

Regarding III tour though, Van Halen at its perceived lowest still outdrew say, a Nirvana at its peak.

I think that's al. The intro is ed but the kick drum and the high hats are all al. If the sacred sin songs are indicative of eds drumming then yeah it's al playing.
