I don't always listen to hard rock, but when I do, I prefer Van Halen. Stay Frosty my friends.

Those songs as radio singles would be really good.

She's The Woman was a single, but I think Dave's new lyrics really stopped it from getting a lot of airplay.

Tattoo wasn't loved by most diehard fans. But that and STW got pretty decent airplay throughout 2012. Here is radio chart showing spins for 2012. They both were contending with massive catalog of VH hits though, so relatively good ;-)

I completely agree. They were closer to a cross of hard rock and new wave with a touch of goth. Not a huge fan. I really know nothing about them beyond their videos and the singer filling in for Jim Morrison, (which seemed like a perfect fit). In fact I wouldn't be surprised if they intentionally avoided the hair metal look and sound. They definitely have an unmistakably unique sound.

1OO% agree. The image is what turned me off to those late 80's cookie cutter, copy cat bands. Toward the end there, I remember thinking, " Are you fuckin' kidding me with this shit?" I think record company's may have been trying to cash in( don't really blame them), but it was just sensory overload for me personally. I had had enough.

I see Tesla mentioned, and I personally feel it's unfortunate that they get lumped in with that nonsene. They are the last band from that decade that I truly dig. Then, and now.

Night Ranger(though they predate "hair metal") is another band that I see/read, thrown in the mix. I dig the fuck out of that band. The opening riff of Don't Tell Me, still gets my rock and roll juices flowing. Gillis/Watson was a site to see live.

I would argue that the template for progressive metal, truly progressive with a bit of what was defined as metal in the mid seventies would be Rush's 2112.

While I don't look fondly on some of my favorite hair metal artists from back in the day, the music FOR THAT DAY was perfect. Outside of people who were into alternative music, I don't recall many people going hipster on hair metal artists. Yes today we can look back on some and go "geez the purge was needed" but most of us who were in our 20's were into it. It was cool that our favorite music was the most popular genre out there at the time.

Today I look at them as just a product of the age. Can do that for every generation. Heck the artists who performed the purge have a terrible look too. Unkempt hair. Flannel. Jean shorts, Docs, 70's style clothes.

It had to go away but it sure was fun while it lasted

I can honestly say I was never into hair metal. I thought it was cheesy af even back then. Yeah, I liked Ratt, Crue, Dokken, Cinderella etc BUT that was only for a specific time frame. 12 years old to maybe 15. 16 on...it was all thrash/metal. They had a short shelf life and I was usually done by the 2nd/3rd album and never looked back on any of them again.

I was into "classic rock" from the get-go. VH, Zep, Who etc.

Does anyone have an example of a classic rock band getting radio play with a brand new song? Further, any bands still together creating songs that are worthy of it? I think Van Halen falls into a category where a monster first track would break the barrier. Springsteen got radio play for Radio Nowhere recently, and while I know he's classic rock's darling, VH with the right single, is not far behind.
