Alright first of all - I've been away for a couple years, so forgive my ignorance when I bumbled into the thread.

Secondly.... What's the latest info on this? We're almost midway through 2017. I remember when HOF happened, that was 07, then there was the snippet of "Getting a little Lopez on this track" in 09/10, on a track on an album that came out two or three years later. With Van Halen, the wheel turns slowly.

So a little update for this kiwi linker would be sweet, good sir

I don't always listen to hard rock, but when I do, I prefer Van Halen. Stay Frosty my friends.

I don't know this for certain, but I have a hunch that Sammy will never be back in Van Halen, but Mike will. Maybe fairly soon.

Well since they got wiped out with grunge i guess not. Well that is the narrative and in some ways its true but maybe its just the industry or supply and demand.

A lot of bands that had success in the alternative 90's in fact had their roots with the hair metal days. Weezer's main songwriter Rivers Cuomo used to play on the strip. Candlebox which had a little run were hair metal. Collective Soul were almost New Wave. Alice n Chains and Pantera were hair metal bands. Stainds guitarist and main songwriter was a student of Tony Macalpine.

Then you look at other genres of music. Dan Huff of Giant is a huge producer in Nashville. Works with Keith Urban and others in country music. On the pop scene Butch Walker formally of South Gang is a big producer, writer for Pink, Avril, Taylor Swift, Fallout Boy, and others.

Then a guy who wasn't a shredder but we probably make fun of his mullet Richard Marx writes and produces for a lot of artists.

Anyway I think what really happened was that these bands, were dropped and put into debt. They played music that wasn't popular so they figured they might as well get a real job. I think they were certainly capable of doing more with music it just was going to be a different route and that may have been too difficult for the majority of them. You don't learn how to play guitar like you do without some idea of music theory.

    Just my opinion.

I'm not saying none of them were dropped, but they made it easy for the companies to drop them by not delivering any good stuff Some of them prior to grunge. Grunge helped them clean house on acts they mighta held on to for a little longer if grunge didn't hit.

Yeah, there were bands like Candlebox that did well, but it only happened cuz they had something to offer. Most of the 80's bands had nothing left in the tank...hit record wise.

Another point being missed here, grunge didn't even last that long. By '95 it was over. Korn, Pantera, Rage, Manson....it went that route before you knew it.

Did the big bands have an advantage, sure, did the companies jump on the bandwagon, sure, but if those bands had anything great left to offer it woulda been put out by now.
Those bands weren't ever gonna string out 6, 7, or more, great records. I think the record companies knew that. Very few bands in history have been able to do it.
The great bands could, thus, they got to carry on.

Had VH released a couple VHIII's in '91 and '95 they would been dropped just like the rest.

    Yup.

F.U.C.K. and Balance were pretty clever records if you think about it. Not 80s style hair metal, but not alternative 90s stuff, not retro classic rock. Compatible with the 90s, but not defined by them. They don't sound dated to me.
