    Default Dallas Free Concert

Just watched this last night again on YouTube. The band was so tight then. 1991-1993 were Van Hagar at their peak live.

I know this gig, along with the Whisky gig, weren't impromptu jams, but they also wern't part of a tour date either. Goddamn...what a blast that would have been to attend either gig. Just dripping with Van Halen goodness!

Also, any truth to the rumor that the city of Dallas had no idea what band they issued the concert permit for? I think I read that here.

Go to work.....and go to a VH concert. Not a bad day of work at all.

Anybody on this board go to the show?

But if you're at work, and you hear through the grapevine(or on the radio) that Van Halen is playing in the westend, do you suddenly get a case of the trots?

Me? Somehow, someway, I'm going to be all up in that shit.

    The concert, not the trots.

I was, and it was a incredible show. Fun fun fun. The setting in ther middle of downtown Dallas, and the crowd, proved to be intensely awesome.

ABSOLUTELY what HH said. I can't believe it's going on 25 years ago.

Here's a pic (of about 50) I took that day...and not too bad considering this was back in the day when an autofocus pocket 35mm film camera was still the norm:

Wow, for some reason I've never bothered to watch this show. I had no idea they had ever played A. A political blues live. Learn something new everyday.

Very cool shot! Very candid, and you were very close.
I have the dvd bootleg (don't we all? Haha) and it looks like a great time!

...obviously, that was the "Panama intro 'Flying Eddie'" he had been doing for so long. Once Al started the drums and Ed got on the riser, you just kinda knew when it was coming.

We stayed between 10-20 "rows" back, and towards the sides. However, we were able to drop back and loop from side to side, and still saddle up to about 30-40 feet from the sides of the stage.

The most intense parts of the crowd were definitely right in the middle the first 50 feet from the front of the stage. From what I remember, the areas to the sides where we stayed in seemed like the usual push-and-shove GA, nothing too dangerous or scary. I do know that I've been in far worse GA crowds than the Dallas free show.

...this was also THE tour for me.

I saw them TEN times on the F.U.C.K. tour, missing a lot of classes and maxing out a credit card to do it.

The Dallas free show was the SECOND VH concert that I had lost my favorite baseball cap in the middle of the show, only to bump into the person wearing/holding it after the show was over. Needless to say, that cap was instantly retired the night of 12/04/91.

And the absolute highlight of this run of VH shows was the Easter Sunday, 4/07/92 concert in Omaha.

It was my birthday (4/07) AND Easter Sunday, and my parents bribed me to drive home for the weekend with Manhattan, KS and Omaha GA tickets as a birthday gift. Long story short, I found my way to front row in front of Ed's mic that show. A couple of picks and a couple high-fives that night and it was one of the coolest birthdays I've had in 45 years...

    Fantastic!

I used to do the Flying Eddie, when performing Panama, at the same spot - that C#min. chord really growls! I love how he nails it, let's it ring out, then rides the root note w/slight palm muting.

Just mentioned (again!) that Panama is my quintessential VH song, in Coulda's newer thread.

That's beyond wicked! Good for you, man.
Great memories for sure! That tour, and the RHRN one, were flat out killer!!!
