Default Tuner Question For Gibson SG

I bought a Gibson SG a few months back. The guitar is great and the color (Inverness Green) is pretty cool. It came with the Min-Etune, which i was initially skeptical about.

After playing it for a while, I've decided the auto tuner isn't for me. I understand why people like them, but I don't really switch tunings that much (I have multiple guitars at different tunings) and it's annoying to change strings.

I wanted to see if anyone on here had any recommendations on good tuners to replace the Min-Etune with, and if anyone has done this on their own.

    Thanks again!

I've seen some positive response to these. I don't own any yet, but they look nice.

Those do look very nice! But, there is no telling whether they will fit.

Maltiero, I would recommend taking your guitar to a qualified guitar technician and have him do the work. Depending on how the Min-E-Tune system is mounted, you will probably have to fill, redrill and refinish in order to mount any new tuners properly.

The Min-E-Tune system is a total disaster. What a nightmare. Totally useless. If it is programmed to tune to standard pitch chromatically you will automatically be out of tune anyway. And what about alternate tunings? Sorry, but I've never heard any positive feedback about the Min-E-Tune system.

I know they're a direct for for your regular Kluson style tuners (obviously haha). I *think* I read that Min-E-Tune and Kluson have the same post hole size, but without the screw holes.

But I could not agree more about said tuning system. I thought it was an interesting concept when it first came out, but then every guitar I tried with it showed how bad it was. Then of course there was the 2015 debacle.

Edit: Just found this, it may help:

I was probably thinking of the Robot tuning system which definitely can't be replaced easily. Cool thread from the Gibson forum. There might be some bargains on guitars with that crap MinE-Tune setup...retrofit with nice modern/vintage style tuners and it's all good!

Unless your looking to have the tuners match the old school SG aesthetic, go with a set of 3:3 Grovers, most dependable aftermarket tuners I've ever used. You might also want to go to a luthier and have your nut replaced with one that matches where your strings hit the neck from your tuners. Gibson, & SG's are notorious for having bad nuts straight from the factory and people constantly talk about how their SG won't tune. Replace the nut and its a different story.

Absolutely correct...great advice! I recommend the white TusqXL nut and Big Bends Nut Sauce. I use both of these on a lot of my guitars.

I like the Tonepros Klusons...they are cosmetically identical to vintage Klusons but they have a better gear ratio and vastly improved operation.

Of course, one of the main keys to staying in tune is attaching the string to the post correctly. There are lots of videos on YouTube that you can find on how to do this, specifically for 3 on a side Gibson style guitars.
