Default 10 Year Anniversary of VH with Dave

On this last day of Summer I think it's worth noting--and appreciating--the fact that after 1996, 2000, and 2001...Diamond Dave has been in the band for 10 years now. This is right around the time when they were jamming with Wolf in '06 and probably started the process of talking to Dave. Oddly enough about exactly 10 years after the '96 BOVI/VMA/GC/MM fiascos.

If you count when they released their first album, he has been in the band longer than the first era.

A great thing, again, worth addressing and I for one am grateful despite the Michael Anthony/only-1-studio-album argument. And I say that because of 96/00/01 and all of the rumors, cockteasing, and living hell that went along with it being a die-hard Van Halen fan at the turn of the millennium.

Wow, good call. Time certainly flies. It's also crazy to think that this stint is now longer than his original (or equal?).

And despite all of our complaints, 3 tours, a studio album, and a live album isn't bad output considering everyone's age.

What are you thankful for? In the last 10 years they have produced 1 mediocre album and have done 3 tours. Is DLR "in" the band? Yes. But I wouldn't really call them an active band. They tour once in a while, play songs from DLR's 1st time around and make a few bucks. It's like a circus show. It's an old and tired act that is fading fast. Evidenced by the statistics from the 2015 tour. They truly are at the end of the line. They are simply a nostalgia band celebrating their material from the late 70's/early 80's.

You're not an active band if you don't release material but still tour? Nonsense. Give your head a shake.

Well, yeah while I like ADKOT, I can't say that from a big picture optics perspective that they are not a nostalgia act. I agree. ACDC is a nostalgia act. Granted they make new record, but for 95% of their stadium audience they couldn't name a new song on the new album. So was it worth it for ACDC to record an album that everyone shared for free, that no one really gives a shit about because it's got no new megatunes like Back in Black or Your Shook Me All Night Long?

Same with Iron Maiden, spending huge dollars in the studio to make a record no one will pay for to then tour when basically none of their audience knows any of the new songs nor cares to hear them.

Actually, we do. LOL Maiden does tours where they play 90% new material and they still fill stadiums and arenas. I'm with ya on everything else.

Well yes, upon further inspection they do a respectable 47% new to newer tracks. I doubt 99% of their audience sings the words to the newer tracks though. I also suspect you are not within the 99% but represent the 1% diehard.

Very true, Rush and some other older bands have played the vast majority of their modern new albums live as well and were well received (but it's certainly true that many others have not done that). Bruce Dickinson has said (correctly, I think) that American audiences in particular are only really receptive to the classic stuff, but the rest of the world seems to love hearing the newer Iron Maiden songs. And Van Halen used to do that. I mean hell, the live video for Right Here Right Now has what, 17 tracks? And 11 of them are all the new songs, right? VH had a ton of hits by then but had the attitude that the new album was going to be the focus regardless. They did it with confidence. The overseas audiences for these older rock bands are still heavily populated by receptive young people whereas here it's mostly balding gray-hairs with their grandkids. American audiences are just easily jaded and most of those old bands have toured in the states way more than overseas over their history. We're spoiled and lazy about learning new stuff. But unfortunately VH rarely leaves North America to see the difference.

Of course hit songs that people have heard for 30 or 40 years and that were released when guitar rock was popular are always going to be staples that fans want to hear, but I'm still kind of shocked at how little of ADKOT got played over two tours, especially when so much of that album is consistent stylistically with the songs people know from the old days. And even more especially when they had a tour in 2007-2008 just to celebrate Dave being back and for playing the old catalog. They had a reunion tour first to clear the deck. There should have been room in the last two tours to play a lot more of ADKOT. They damn sure did a great job with playing a variety of the more obscure older songs though, they kicked ass with that. I just think Eddie is just SO scarred by rejection he's inhibited from writing, or releasing, or playing stuff live that hasn't already been embraced. It's a loss for hardcore fans for sure.

    Depends on the band.

Pearl Jam's stats from their 2016 tour.

    SONG COUNT: 764
    SHOWS COUNT: 25
    AVERAGE SONGS PLAYED: 31
    DIFFERENT SONGS PLAYED: 168

Their newest album is pretty well represented. Out played only by Ten, Vs. and cover songs.
