Default How Many Of You Use the D-Tuna?

I recently purchased and installed a chrome GOTOH Floyd Rose on my MIM Wolf Special. It plays, sounds and looks great, but after i made the switch, I found myself in a dilemma:

-Do I transplant the D-Tuna to the GOTOH?

At first, i thought about it, even though the D-Tuna was black and the new trem was chrome. Then I thought I should probably get a chrome one so it would look right. As I was getting ready to check Ebay for a Chrome one, it hit me. I rarely, if ever, use the damn thing.

It just kind of sits there unused. It's kind of nice knowing that it's there, just in case, but I was looking at my Wolf hanging on the wall with the new GOTOH unit on it, and decided that it looked better without it anyway. So, I'm not putting it on my Wolfgang.

Is there anybody else in the same boat, where you leave the thing on it without thinking about it, but never use it? You just kind of leave it there, because it's an EVH thing?

Think of it like a condom - it's better to have it and not need it... lol.
Much like the trem bar, you don't have to actually screw it in just because it's there.

Sure, I use it every time I play a tune in Drop D. If you don't play in Drop D often then don't use one. But IMO $40 is worth it to never have to hesitate before laying into the opening riff of Unchained.

Definitely one of Ed's more practical guitar innovations! No need for a spare axe to do dropped tuning on the low E. Invaluable, on a Floyd equipped fiddle...

What kind of music are you guys playing that use it all the time? I don't have a single song on my set list that requires it. It has basically just been jewelry for my guitar.

Yep. I have a D-tuna installed on six of my regular players. I've even modded a couple of those cheap "speedloader" style Floyd knockoffs to make them D-tuna friendly.

We play mostly '90's-'00's hard rock, but also some classic and pop stuff too. Here are our dropped-D songs from our four-set show Friday night:

    Stone - AIC
Never Gonna Stop - Rob Zombie
    Everlong - Foo Fighters
Wings of a Butterfly - HIM
    High - Jimmie's Chicken Shack
    No One Knows - QOTSA
    Snap Your Fingers - Prong

...we also play Collective Soul's "Shine" and the Orgy version of "Blue Monday" which 1/2-step dropped, but just as easy to retune with the D-tuna as not.

I used to purposely write songs where I would switch the D Tuna back and forth to do drop d chugs and then low e chugs. All my floyds have a d tuna. I will say, some have been through more than one because I've found issues with QC. If you don't use one all the time, you're better off hammering down your fine tuner to E and than if you need to do do drop d back the finer tuner off pretty much all the way. That almost always get you the one full step pitch drop. I'm pretty sure its what Ed used to do live before the D tuna. Watch US Fest, they do Romeo and hop right into Unchained in a very short amount of time. Ed is still using the same Franky. During their end of the world song finale on Romeo you can almost hear Ed adjust a fine tuner some where.

Most of the music we play is 70s/80s classic rock stuff. It was before the 90s when everybody was writing shit it drop D. I usually bring three guitars to every gig, one of which is my Custom Strat, which doesn't have a Floyd, so it's pretty easily tuned down if needed. I'm going to leave it off.

I used mine all the time.

I like the black one on the chrome floyds too. It matches the black saddle screws so it fits just perfect in my mind.

I gotta say it...there was not a whole lot of dropped D songs going on, way back when, not until Fair Warning came out, that is!

It's only fitting that Edward is behind the idea for this device!
But I'm stuck in the '80s, and just use the fine tuner on my Kahler 2520s.

Love the D Tuna...and for those not familiar when I show them and they try it on one of my guitars they are amazed they did not know it existed!

    Another EVH innovation!!!
