The kind of tune that really separated VH from the rest of the pack back in the day. Love both Dave and Ed's guitar playing on this and having Nicolette Larson sing a line was a nice offbeat touch.

    Love the song.
There isn’t really any music that I can’t stomach or I feel is unlistenable… but country music comes close at times. - Steve Vai

I believe it was Dave that came up with the music. Am I wrong? I seem to remember Dave saying this on his show. Unless I'm mistaken.
"He has a swaggering retro machismo that will give hives to the Steinem cabal" -Camille Paglia on Donald Trump

"Make way for the bad guy"- Tony Montana

'This hamburger don't need no helper"- David Lee Roth

"I wish Bon Jovi would've given me a call before he recorded all of his hits, because the lyrics would've been smarter, the melodies would've been much more smashing, and they would've sold a lot fewer records." -David Lee Roth

"My beef is people thinking Bon Jovi is good cuz they sold lots of records to housewives." -tango

"But being number one doesn’t really mean jack fuck all. We sold twice as many records as other records that year (1984) that landed in the Number One position." ~Eddie Van Halen

Dave plays a small sliver of CTBM melody line here on guitar. 1979 tour. At the 1minute mark.

    Dave is a great player.

What the hell was that song he played on a radio show back in the day? Great catchy tune with dime serious fingerpicking. I'm blanking on it but if I heard it I could sing every word. Nothing's coming to me. I have it on a cassette somewhere.

Wasn't it something like 79 And Sunset? Didn't he play it on was of his radio interviews with that DJ Ladd. I bet Coulda would remember.

This song was a true group effort if I remember correctly. Templeman gave Ed a bottleneck guitar and told him to lean how to play slide and DLR added his finger picking to what Ed had come up with.

Saying DLR is a great guitar player I think is quite a stretch guys. As Gene Simmons would say, he's proficient enough.

Dave might have said so in his show, but I wouldn't take that as gospel.
Taylor Swift is nice to look at. Adele can sing.

Emperor Brett - "I can't believe you guys are analyzing song-by-song Van Halen III? What next, analyzing the script of Stroker Ace looking for some shred of Citizen Kane?"

David Lee Roth did the impossible. He made Van Halen better. Deal with it!

    Preferred pronouns: he/him/his

Hurricane Halen - Let's all gingery touch our sword tips!!!

Nice! My god what a throwback. I bet I listened to that interview a million times when it came out. That was scary. Not only did every word of the song come back to me but every word of the interview too.

I read the VH News Desk story about "Could This Be Magic?" but it doesn't make any sense. Nicolette Larson did record a high harmony on the chorus after the guitar break, but...

The article goes on to say that Eddie returned the favor by playing on Nicolette Larson's album..,which would be impossible since "Could Thos Be Magic?" was recorded in late 1979/early 1980 and the album that Nicolette Larson played on was released before Van Halen's first album came out in 1978.
    http://www.vhnd.com/women-and-children-first/could-this-be-magic/

I hear her voice in the chorus right after the guitar solo, but I don't think Eddie got in a time machine and returned the favor by playing on her album in the past!
