I think in this case you can , Eds live tone in 82/83 was really thin brittle and clean . Oh can you get in touch with the Scorpions management and tell them to officially release their set

    I remember reading that!
Something about "we copied a dead pickup for that $Million sound."

True, but the US Fest is only one example I used. Some of the other shows from that era (Largo, South America, etc.) sound the same to my ears.

I have always said it sounded like a distorted single coil.
Eddie had such powerful hands that it was like he could steal squeeze remnants
of the brown tone out, just by sheer force.

But compare the "Sheep" versions of Unchained, to the HUGE tone heard on FW/Oakland.
    Night & Day.

And Oakland isn't super distorted, but a big, sustainy sound that is full not brittle.

You may be right, I'd still love to hear the VH set in DTS sound like the Triumph dvd, for example.

And yeah, I'm surprised the Scorpions set hasn't been officially released. Especially since they do a lot of live releases and there was a ton of vault stuff on the 50th anniversary discs, all of which I have. I've been listening to them a lot lately. Such a great band.

My God, i loved that guitar as a kid.
And wasn't he using completely different amps on the FW tour?
    I'd always heard rumors.

I also love that he played "Unchained" in 1981 at the proper speed.
My God, the '84 tour sounds like Dave Mustaine joined the band for that one.

I always thought Ed's tone was (as mentioned above) very souped up single coil sounding on the Diver Down tour. Or at least a tapped humbucker sound. I think he warmed up the sound a bit on the 1984 tour but the Diver Down tour does stand out to me. Was he using the Kramer by this point?

Aren't there stories around 82 that his amp blew up or was worked on and never sounded the same? Seem to remember something like that.

Ed's live tones from 78-81 set the benchmark for fat, warm, and huge live tone.

At some point his main Marshall got lost by airport luggage, he says, and went to Indonesia (guess it was trying to return to his mother's ancestral home?). I've read he used Music Mans, Hiwatts and anything else he could rent at that point (although maybe that was `81?).

Later on, I'm sure it was the low E string going under the bobbin and impacting the coils that messed up that original huge sound, but by that point they knew they could fart in the mic and draw cheers, so maybe fixing it didn't seem like such a priority. I don't think the Kramers showed up until the Diver Down tour when he had the doubleneck, and then during 1984 the 1984 Kramer and on showed up.

I think Ed also used the Kramer Frankie Ad guitar on the DD tour, no?

Along those lines... Why does tape on Ed's guitars look so cool, yet the green tape on a white guitar with pearloid pickguard - Vai's - looks so shitty?

And I'm a HUGE fan of Vai...
