5150iii 1x12 Combo
Hey everyone. Long time lurker here. I was hoping you guys could help me. I got the 1x12 combo about a month ago. I'm having an issue with the amp sounding too bright and thin. Has anyone else had problems with this? Or have some setting s to make it sound warmer? Thank you for the help.

I did think so on the clean channel.. in order to get a big full clean sound I have to of course turn the gain way down.. volume up as well as the bass.
Real nice fender/twin sound but the prob. I have is when doing this, the Reverb has nasty buzzing thing going on, I assume it is from the bottom low end frequency.
Also when I get this good clean sound on channel one, when I go to channel 2 it gets that huge volume jump. I am almost sold on getting the 5150 pedal to replace using channel 2 for medium gain. Its like we have 3 channels, but can only get 2 to sound good at a time.

I've actually solved the volume jump with the Xotix Ep Boost. Does this amp just have to be cranked to sound warmer?

The 5150llls are really good sounding amps a lower volumes , at least mine was. Can you share your settings ? Is your speaker still fairly new , that could be part of the thin bright sound you're hearing. Check out this guys settings he shows at the end of the video , he`s playing thru greenbacks

I have my gain at 9 o'clock, lows at 1 o'clock, mids at 11 o'clock and high at 12 o'clock. The amp is only three weeks old. I guess I just wasn't expecting it to sound so bright even if it is new. I played a gig with it this past Saturday and it just sounded so thin.

Speaker needs to break in and turn up the resonance in the back. It'll never have the thump like the old Peavey 5150 head has, but it shouldn't be thin sounding either.
VH III is Ed's solo album. So everybody who keeps saying they wish he'd do one needs to stfu and listen to III. Then stfu again.

I absolutely love my 5150 III 1X12 combo. I mean the sound I get at low volumes is amazing and on channel 3 its freakin badass!!! Mess around with your settings and your power scaling knob and you'll find the sweet spots for sure. One of the things I did to make mine a little more versatile is I got a 1X12 cab to go with it so essentially now its a 2X12 combo.... just rounds out the sound a little more for me plus it looks nice having the black EVH combo with the Ivory EVH cab right next to each other.
I must say this little amp is everything I could possibly want from a bedroom setting amp to a louder kick ass sound if I want to crank it. Just get comfortable with your settings and take some time to find what sounds good and what works and I guarantee you you'll LOVE this thing..

Gain 6-7, low 6-7, mid 2-3, high 5-6, resonance 5.

The last real band I was a part of? I went in using the Eddie settings on a Peavey 5150 combo. Mids at about 2 1/2, if I remember correctly. Great tone, yet very scooped sound. First gig in a bar happens, and I hear "turn up your mids!" I believe that as well.
Part of the EVH tone from the early days that we all love, is the midrange honk. They're important frequencies IMO, and help the guitar sound cut through the mix.
I used two amp sounds, clean and dirty. Had the same settings on the gain channel ( boosted mids) to play VH, Ozzy, Bon Jovi, Whitesnake, Metallica, Kiss, etc.... Never once heard a complaint about the guitar sound. Mids are a guitarist's friend! Unless you're tuning to the key of Z and playing Cookie Monster vocals types of 'songs'..."There's too many people on this basketball that's floating around the sun, who are too afraid to allow themselves to FEEL" - Edward Van Halen
"Van Halen was never about the singer..." - a very wise fan.
"Embrace the past. Live in the moment but keep your eyes on the future, and keep on moving forward..." - Richie Sambora

I got one in March brand new for $800 from Craigslist. Absolute steal. Guy bought it at GC and went past the return period when he decided he wanted like a 120 watt amp.....all he does is play at home! Why the hell would anyone take a hit like that giving away the EVH for an amp fit for Gillette Stadium? I don't get it. Anyways, what a f'n amp. My god does that thing scream. I LOVE the red channel.

I just got mine a few days ago and love it...I had a 5150 2x12 combo back in the day I had to sell when times got tough; this is a great amp. Still messing with the settings and have a dumb question on effects; all in front or some in the loop? I know this is heavily debated but if I am only using clean channel 1 will having effects in the loop even do anything? My limited knowledge is that effects in the loop effect different stages (pre vs power amp) so I am wondering if by not using channels 2 or 3 how it works out?
Also; any other settings for the various channels from anyone? It's 5150 time!

If you plan on only ever using the clean channel then you can have all the FX up front. However, if you plan on using any of the amp gain channels I would recommend having your Volume (if it's 25k), delay, and reverb in the FX loop in that order. If your volume pedal is 250k then it's probably better off in front. Depending on how you prefer your pitch and chorusing effects you can have them in the loop too. Pitch should go anywhere before the delays/verbs, modulation can go anywhere depending on your preference (do you want to chorus your echoes or echo your chorus?).
The main reason delays and verbs should be in the FX Loop if you're using amp gain is that they both have a tendency to get muddy in front of the amp. Just think about the signal path: Guitar -> Delay -> Distortion = the amp is distorting a bunch of signal at once, which makes for a less defined tone. Whereas Guitar -> Distortion -> Delay = the delay is repeating your carefully crafted distorted/overdriven tone, giving you more control and clarity in the repeats.
As an example, my signal path is:
Guitar -> Wah -> Buffer -> Phaser -> Flanger -> Compressor -> OD1 -> OD2 -> Boost -> Amp Input
FX Send -> Volume Pedal (25k) -> Line 6 M9 (for Echo and occasional pitch/modulation) -> Reverb -> FX Return
I hope this helps!Last edited by Jedi McFly; 09.12.16 at 05:21 AM.
