Default Several People Kidnapped From Restaurant in Mexican Resort

Mexican authorities were searching Monday for as many as 16 people who were abducted by gunmen from an upscale restaurant in the resort city of Puerto Vallarta.

The mass kidnapping from the La Leche restaurant, located on the main drag of the city's hotel district, happened around 1 a.m. local time, authorities said.

"According to witnesses from the place, several gunmen arrived to the place aboard a Toyota Tacoma and Chevrolet Suburban, who deprived the freedom of a group of people who were at the site," Jalisco Attorney General Eduardo Almaguer said in statement translated by NBC News.

When police arrived, they found a Dodge Challenger, a Jeep Limited, a Land Rover, a Cadillac Escalade, and Honda CRV that may belong to the abducted patrons, the statement said.

Mexican media said as many as 16 people were abducted, but authorities did not immediately confirm that number, the Associated Press reported.

In a series of tweets aimed at residents and tourists, Jalisco Governor Aristotle Sandoval said "the events that occurred at dawn in Puerto Vallarta cannot be allowed or tolerated."

"We will not allow them to rob us of our tranquility," Sandoval wrote.

The two cities that Mexico has got to maintain the rule of law in are Cabo and Puerto Vallarta.

I used to love Mexico and spend most weekends there in the 90's as I had a friend with a home in Rosarito. We'd surf all morning and into the afternoon then go to Papas and Beer to get the swerve on for the night.
All of that changed in the early 00's, as soon as you crossed the border the feeling of security was gone. It became palpable by 02 so I just stopped going. Felt like I was wearing pants made of bacon trying to negotiate with a pack of wolves.

Uuuuuncomfortable is what I'm trying to say.

Perhaps not surprisingly, both the kidnappers and kidnappees are members of cartels. One of the problems right now is that as El Chapo has been taken into custody, the Jalisco New Generation cartel has been fighting his Sinaloa cartel for supremacy. What is going on in Mexico is when a third world/developing country has to deal with mafias that have had decades to grow and gain power.

The forgotten casualties of war are Mexicans. Mexico really started its Drug War in 2007. From 2007-2014, the last year data is available, over 164,000 Mexican civilians have been killed as a result. To put that into perspective, only 105,000 civilians have been killed as a result of the Iraq and Afghan Wars. What is going on there is insane.

For those of you that like documentaries, there is a fascinating Vice episode/documentary (41 minutes) on the Mormons (including relatives of Mitt Romney) in Mexico who are fighting back against the cartels. The filmmakers even come eerily close to danger just for being there. I found this to be quite enlightening and well worth the time.

That's why I never went to Cabo for the birthday bash. 164,000 dead since 2007 that's really bad and a war.

Used to walk across the border years ago to the sports betting place on Saturday mornings.
Have a couple of beers and bet 20 bucks on a few games. Haven't been there since 2002. Tho the safety in Tijuana has improved in the last several years, still, nothing down there that I need that bad.

Things in Mexico would improve if the government down there would just pass a few gun control laws.

    Oh wait. Nevermind.
