Default 1982 interview with Eddie (long)

We probably all read the article which was based on this interview, but there was quite a bit of stuff Eddie said "off the record". Mostly the complaining about Dave not wanting him to do any more "guitar hero shit" and Warner Brothers mistreating them. Really long, but worth it.

One question that got lost in the moment was "Did you write that bass line?" (For Hang 'Em High) Eddie was talking about something else and never answered it. That would be pretty interesting to hear given Eddie's claim about Mike's bass parts.

And of course Eddie's attitude about Diver Down was completely different than it would be later.

Eddie plays an early version of Jump for the interviewer too. "I'm really getting into keyboards". That's either awesome to hear or depressing depending upon your view of what came later.

That interviewer definitely dances around the respect line when the exhausted and I'm sure hungover Eddie asks him to repeat a question.

We fucking get it! Yes we know who you are. And this is a great interview. Have most of us heard this before? Yes we have. For the new posters that have not heard this interview, out fucking standing that they get a chance to hear this. It's really fucking cool to put words from what some us read back in the day to the actual interview in audio. Pass on some great Van Halen moments.

Nice! Glad to see this interview found its way back to the interwebs. Was taken down for quite some time.

I suggest someone rips this and keeps it for safekeeping WHEN this gets taken down again.

    Great listen.

That was interesting. I know I've heard it before but not for a long time.

It's interesting how even at that point Ed was resentful toward the record company. It seems to me that Ed has always thought someone was screwing him or out to screw him.

His paranoia is what eventually ruined the band, at least in regards to VH being a recording band.

    Great interview...thanks for posting.

"Randy Rhodes was honest, because he admitted that he learned all his stuff from me"

I also like his comments about the little songs the band inserts between main tracks. Always loved that about Van Halen's records...

It becomes clear to any recording artist during the making of the first record how a recording contract is not all all what they dreamed it would be and how incredibly one-sided the whole structure is.

I guess it would be hard not to be resentful when you are selling millions of records and end up owing the record company money after your first platinum album. That's why I don't feel sorry for the record companies today. They helped create the current environment where fans don't want to buy a temporary copy of music that they'll need to replace again and again, and where artists just create and market their music on their own and end up making more money than before.

But at the same time, Eddie's "they didn't do anything for us at all" thing is a little harsh. At least give Ted some props for his guidance. I guess we all exaggerate when we are angry though.

Wish Eddie was a bit more gracious toward other guitarists. Even the interviewer had to mention that he thought Randy did sound different from Eddie. Randy did use some of Eddie's tricks (who didn't?), but Randy also had his own thing going. Eddie also wasn't very complimentary toward one of the few guitarists who did NOT sound like him...Andy Summers. Was kinda nice to hear Eddie be self depreciating at the end of that one though..."But I guess my guitar sounds the same on all my records too!"

I know Eddie was defending the album there, but the tidbits about the originals they didn't include on the album spoke volumes about the circumstances around Diver Down.

I can't imagine why anybody affiliated with Van Halen or Warner Brothers would want that interview removed ...

This was an interview by Jas Obrecht. I have personally spoken to Jas about this interview. He said that the tape was outright stolen from him and that in all of his years it was the only single one of his raw interview tapes that ever found its way to the public. He was not happy about it, but since it had already been out, he allowed me to use the entirety of the the interview for my book, which was awfully nice of him.

Eddie really came off badly in that interview. He slagged Randy Rhoads, Frank Zappa and Andy Summers. Oh, and that David Lee Roth guy, too.

He was, however, very complimentary of this guy ...
