This speaks volumes about what most people think of Van Halen today. I was looking at radio station websites and came across this:

http://www.rock1057.net/r-links.php

Note the comment next to Van Halen. Eddie, where the hell are you?

I know Peoria is only about 90 minutes away from Chicago, but lets keep this in perspective...this radio station is still located in or around PEORIA. It's not exactly the thriving Metropolis that LA, New York, Chicago, Detroit, Miami etc. are. So their comments really mean very little in the grand scheme of things.

Secondly, I think that little "if anyone still cares" comments are more of out of frustration than anything. Because you know that if Van Halen put out a record tomorrow, it would be on their station's "Heavy Rotation" list immediately.

Thirdly, young people actually still do listen to Van Halen a bit. I was at a birthday party for my niece the other day. While there I asked my outher niece (13 years old & a freshman in High School) if the music I still listened was considered cool. Then I began listing the bands. Here is what she said:

Creed: "Awesome! Everyone loves them."
Sum 41: "I'm gonna marry Deryck" (typical teenage girl response)
Van Halen: "People still listen to them"
Metallica: "Awesome."
SR-71: "Cool"
Motley Crue: "Some people still listen to them."
Guns 'N Roses "They're cool"

My little brother was sitting next to me so I decided to embarrass him. His favorite band is Ratt, so I asked her about them next. She said:
Ratt: "Who are they?"
Me: "You know, "Round & Round," "Back For More," "Lay It Down," "You're In Love"...
Her: "Never heard of them."
Me: "HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!"

Can't be suprised about that kind of comment, and I think it's a fair indication of the general view on VH.

We've reached the point where even a lot of hardcore fans have thrown in the towel. So the average music fan must have been at that point ages ago.

It's not impossible for them to come back and be popular again, but it's also possible that I could find $1,000, spontaneously burst into flames, and run naked down the street singing I'm a little teacup with Kip Winger while drinking vodka from one of those beer helmets. Yeah, it's not very likely.

They'd have to pull a U2 or something.

Next to Sammy's site, they should put "as if anyone ever cared."
Could this be magic?

I also think this is really frustration. While the diehards like ourselves religiously salivate for any VH news, the general public just doesn't care until they have a new product. When it happens, I think the casual fans will return. While a four year hiatus seems an eternity to us, it reaaly isn't considering all the shit that has gone down in the world of VH. Many big time artists have taken long term breaks and no one gets all over their shit about it. I mean just look at Pink Floyd! We're just such fanatical fans that we can't cope with the "no news" crap. Also, have you ever noticed how any word of VH still seems to get shitloads of press? I know its hard, but we just have to give them time.

The "As if anyone still cares" deal could just mean that there's never any news there on their website. Not necessarily that no one cares about the band anymore. Right?
