Default :::To What Degree Have Outside Influences Affected VH Music?

This might come off as lame (whatever), but some of my favorite shows come from the early to mid 80's - stuff like Magnum P.I., The A Team, etc.

The composer for a lot of TV music was Mike Post, hence my familiarity with his work.

That's why, when I listen to III, his influence comes screaming through the speakers.

I thought his influence on III sucked; I don't care for the effects on 'Once,' or 'Fire In The Hole,' or that 'A Year To The Day' didn't meet Eddie's standards (not polished enough), yet Post encouraged him to leave it on the record - sloppy parts and all.

I also remember that Mike's bass playing was at the forefront on "So Is This Love?," as record execs wanted more of him on the record.

    Long story short:

I think we have a lack of new material for two reasons:

    1) Ed got burned over our reception of III, and the sting never left.

    2) Much of what VH recorded was at a time when rock was popular, and the record labels used to push them for new material. Now that rock doesn't sell, there's no longer a push to write and record music.

What do y'all think? How much of VH was VH? To what degree has the band's product been affected by outside influences?

Also, I don't know about the music industry, but have often wondered why Country stars can continue to enjoy commercial success, and continue to sell a lot of records, while Van Halen can't? A lot of today's Country has spilled over into Rock/Southern Rock. The arguments that i've heard don't make sense.

Not to derail or hijack your thread, but your last question is the most interesting. Preferences aside, and never mind whether you LIKE country music or not. There is obviously a business model through which popular music can sell. But it doesn't seem to apply to rock music.

Does anyone on this site have business insight into this? Rock musicians constantly bitch about the industry, but country artists don't seem to have the same problem.

That about sums it up. You basically covered your whole question.

Regarding country...er, you do know what country you're living in. There's more scared and witless racist rednecks than ever in this nation, and they like their honkytonk.

I was just at a state fair last weekend. Dwight Yoakum was playing the free stage. You shoulda see the lines and masses swarming the place. Same free stage had what passes for Credence these days. Crickets and tired mommies resting their feet.

I am in no way being snarky, but I have not faced those kinds of attitudes anymore than I have in other parts of the country - and i'm originally from NY, just outside of NYC.

In Charlotte, people are VERY serious about Van Halen.

And we've got NUMEROUS outlets and channels that market country music - most of which doesn't sound like country.

I don't get why Trace Adkins or Toby Keith might get lots of airplay and record sales, but VH can't? The music isn't that dissimilar, and is in some ways, interchangeable.

Uh, well, I don't think that Van Halen and country are similar or interchangeable genres at all. But that's just me. The closest Ed ever got to any shitkickin' tone was FWYS, and I didn't think it was country-esque just because of the video. And I can assure you that in Southern California, people do not take Van Halen terribly seriously anymore. Perhaps Charlotte is an anomaly. The country artists you mentioned have stayed relevant and participatory in their respective fanbases and markets. Van Halen has not. That's why they don't get as much airplay and sales as bigger country acts. Simple as that.

I don't find those mentioned acts interchangeable with Van Halen either. The Eagles and John Cougar, maybe. And while I like the Eagles and John Cougar, if they were full on " twangy ", I don't think I would care for them. When my ears hear that "twang ", I immediately tune it out. I don't care what the song is about, I simply can't deal with that kind of music.

Country gets the airplay and country fans still buy cd's. Why? No clue, maybe the don't steal the music online or don't know how to? The're seems to be a lot of country radio/XM stations and they still make videos and they are played on CMT and a couple others I think? And girls like it.....so that makes boys like it

Why do you think Bon Jovi and Steven Tyler put out "country" albums (aka same shit they been doing plus steel guitar and banjo lol) always chasing the latest trends looking for a hit.

    Surprised KISS hasn't gone country.........yet

I think bands like, Cream, Zeppelin and Montrose influenced them in the early years.

I think 80s synth music influenced Ed from 1984-1988.

I think Grunge indirectly influenced VH in '95.

I did a country show once in my life. It was a 3 day festival type event in Atlanta they had a rock stage too. I saw all the big acts of the day. I like the talent especially of the musicians. But I can't take the twang. Lots of super hot women though hell that's why I was there.
