Default What specific memories do you have with specific VH songs?

I might as well start at the beginning. Freshman year of high school, 1978. I hear some otherworldly guitar solo blasting out of some guy's blue Camaro during our lunch break. I ask somebody, "What is THAT?" Somebody replies, that's Van Halen!"

"It's so lonely at the top because it's so crowded at the bottom" - Diamond David Lee Roth

"If at first you don't succeed, then skydiving is not for you"

"Be careful what you wish for because you just might lose what you already have"

"Women and Children First ... The REAL Van Halen III"

    Get up.

Huge raging boners in Math class.

The kind you only get when you are about to get called on.

I used to recite the lyrics to myself over and over to psyche myself up for the bringing the book to the board trick.

Coulda Hada^ I thought I was an old fucker!

    J/K

I fully remember hearing Van Halen in 78, but I was not totally aware yet. I recall hanging with a friend of mine hearing DTNA in 79 and liking it - a lot. In 81" when I was 15, I spent a week in the Outer Banks of NC with the same friend. We had a great rock station at the time (FM99) and I recall hearing Fair Warning in heavy rotation. Hanging out at the arcade at the beach, checking out chicks that were way out of my league, and hearing Mean Street, Unchained and So This Is Love playing in the background had a serious impact on me. That, AC/DC BnB and Rush Moving Pictures, along with "The Waiting" by Tom Petty, and my brain was infused with a coming of age feeling that I will always remember.

When I was 7 I heard my sister listening to VH1, now this was 81, but it was the only thing that shit me up.
My Mom bought me my own Cassette of it, I just remember blasting that on the boom box with the house windows open all summer. I wore out the cassette in about a month and had to get it again. I thought at the time that was the only album. Then a friend of my sister gave me another Cassette that was a 3 album special the following summer
VH II, WAC, and FW. I had a great childhood

The summer of 1979, we went on a family vacation to Yosemite. I can still remember my brother complaining during breakfast about somebody blasting "some stupid Van Halen song about a kid in a garbage can" the previous night while he was trying to sleep. No, it wasn't me.

One school vacation in 1986 or 87 my sister and I were staying at my grandparents place and I'd been playing 5150 constantly. We were in my grandfather's car, a big old Ford Fairlane from the early 70's that he loved, and drove past a bunch of teenage girls hanging out. My grandfather (who would have been 72 or 73 years old), out of nowhere, suddenly said "checkin out the girls, see what they got".

The spring of 1980, I had already purchased and listened to the whole album several times, but I was in the car with one of my good buddies who had just bought it on 8 Track. This (not Everybody Wants Some!!) was the 2nd song on the 8 Track, and my friend's first reaction was, "This rocks!!!"

One that sticks out for me was probably my junior year in high school. I had just gotten in to VH my sophomore year because of Runaround and F.U.C.K.

We had an open campus for juniors and seniors so I jumped in the back of this guy's car to get out of there for lunch to go to this pizza joint we frequented. It's weird because I can see it as clear as day now. he had Fair Warning on cassette and he put it in the player and Unchained came on. I think I'd heard it a couple times before that but blasting in this guy's car it was like, "Damn! That's good stuff!"

One other from those years was when I got my driver's license. I had a couple friends that I used to drive to school and I had recorded VH 1 from my CD player onto a cassette so I could listen to it in the car. This girl that I used to take to school always asked me to play "that Ice Cream Man song" because she got a kick out of it. This was 1991 - 92, so it didn't get a lot of airplay on the radio. Which is one of the reasons that I say that Van Halen would have a legion of young fans if stations would play their music even if it's old. So what, it's also timeless. I got hooked and that was 14 or 15 years after the debut.
The only genre I really know is Van Halen.

Friday, April 24, 1981 (I cheated and looked up the date), I'm in ceramics class at high school. Somebody has a cheap transistor radio and Dirty Movies is playing. I can't really hear it very well. Later that day, I hear a little snippet of Mean Street while we're outside playing over the line. It sounds pretty good. That night, I'm out driving around with one of my best friends (the same guy who a couple of years later would drive me out to Fontana the day after the US Festival to get my car that had been towed away) when another new track from Fair Warning came on KMET. The opening riff hit me right between the eyes like a sledgehammer. Good times.

My sister and her friend were having an unauthorized party in her room. They had Jack Daniels and Mountain Dew and they were listening to records. I pestered the hell out of them until they let me in. They put on VH and I heard RWTD for the first time. They let me take a drink of Mt. Dew spiked with JD. I was 8.

I heard WCTBL for the first time on my high school morning show. I got the cassette on my way home.

My wife and I were throwing down and dirty when Poundcake came on the radio. We paused, but Finished What We Started. (Yes, a bisexual man can be happily married. And yes, she knows.)

RWTD summer camp bus 1978. First time I remember hearing VH. I was 7. Nothing more So Cal in the late 70's than being a kid (even a little one) bombing down the 101 in the summer with VH on the radio, bus or not. Even when I hear the song to this day, I can smell that old bus.

1979 i'm 14 & pissed my parents chose to sell our house & move from our perfect So. Cal. home and neighborhood that had every friend I ever made in it
to this dinky small ass town where I knew absolutely nobody. I was attempting to prepare myself mentally to start fresh at this high school where I was sure things would suck.
Soon I meet this kid I end up playing football with all 4 years and he puts VH1 on his boom box and says: "Check this out" and ATBL starts to WAIL.
From that day on things were different.

The first time I heard "5150" the song, and "Summer nights", my taste in music changed. I was a big INXS fan, but when I heard these songs, I became a manic VH fan. Obsessed more like it. Those 2 songs had a lot of impact on me when I was 15.
"Right now" was another one too, the first time I heard the album, this song just stuck out being so different from all the other songs on the album. I loved the piano intro, then came that amazing beat.
What is understood need not be discussed

"Dont disturb my paradise. I've asked you once. I've asked you nice" - "SERIOUS JU JU"

"I am in a blissful state. Dont bug me!!!" - Richard Dreyfuss "The Goodbye girl" 1977

Some off of the top of my head:

1.) Driving to work in the morning and hearing 'Right Now' for the first time. DJ didn't say who the band was before the song started but I knew it was VH.
2.) Driving home from a jam session and hearing the chorus of 'Humans Being'.
3.) Was on a party boat in Aruba. You could swing from a rope into the ocean. I am waiting in line as the music is being blasted. 'Jump' comes on. As it reaches the guitar solo, it was my turn to swing into the water.
