    Default Oh Deer!

Where's Ted Nugent when you need him?

By Alissa Widman Neese The Columbus Dispatch

Kevin Scott surveys the edge of the 7-acre cornfield and shakes his head in disappointment.
There's another group of freshly grown plants gnawed down to the stalk.
The commercial farmer — one of the few left in Westerville — knows it's his job to nourish the hungry masses of central Ohio. But that doesn't include feeding the hordes of white-tailed deer that consistently gobble his crops, leaving behind devastating damage.
"It's like going to Golden Corral," he said. "They line up and eat until their bellies are full."

Several central Ohio cities allow urban hunting to thin troublesome deer herds. The regulated programs reduce property damage and deer-vehicle crashes, officials say, and ensure the remaining deer thrive. Venison can usually be donated to an area food pantry to feed the hungry.
But in Westerville, it's illegal to discharge a weapon or hunt. That makes herd-culling illegal, too.

A handful of area residents have asked city officials to consider modifying the longstanding policy. Some, including Scott, suggested temporary hunting permits, granted on a case-by-case basis for residents with ongoing problems. Others recommended a full-blown hunting program, either with firearms or archery. They also asked for an option to hunt other nuisance wildlife.
It's an ongoing discussion, with safety the No. 1 priority, Westerville Police Chief Joe Morbitzer said.
"We don't want to rush into this," he said. "If we do it, we want to do it right the first time."
Central Ohio municipalities that permit deer hunting inside their limits include Gahanna, Granville, Groveport, Heath, Newark, New Albany and Pataskala. There are differences among programs statewide, but typically registered, vetted hunters are limited to restricted areas and must notify police before hunting.

Gahanna's bow-hunting program has more than halved yearly deer-vehicle crashes, from about 70 in 2006 to about 25 last year, said Terrie Snider, the city police department's office manager.
Westerville police have logged 80 total deer-vehicle crash reports in the past five years, just two with injuries, Morbitzer said.

But herd-culling programs address more than safe roadways. In Franklin County, the Metro Parks system uses sharpshooters to cull its herds regularly and keep the ecosystem in check. Overpopulation doesn't just harm humans, but also deer, foliage and other wildlife, Metro Parks resource manager John Watts said. Sharon Woods, bordering Westerville, was almost grazed to extinction in the 1990s, before the park's deer-hunting program was introduced.

New programs can bring controversy, usually until people learn about the ills of overpopulation, said Karen Norris, spokeswoman with the Ohio Department of Natural Resources' Division of Wildlife.
As urban sprawl gobbles up central Ohio land, driving out the deer's natural predators, there likely won't be enough food to go around, and human-wildlife conflict will increase, Norris said.

"A bucket of water can only hold so much before it spills over, and the same goes for the deer population," she said. "Hunting is the most economic, beneficial way to keep an area at its capacity."

Love Under Lock and Key, one of my favorite albums.

Dokken for a time had the mid tempo rocker down to an art form.
Taylor Swift is nice to look at. Adele can sing.

I knew I had gotten old when I heard "In My Dreams" as a Muzak song in an elevator.

What's really depressing is hearing songs from the 80's on oldies stations like K-Earth 101 here in Southern California.

When I was a kid in the 60s you would hear Perry Como, Andy Williams on department stores public address system. That's life. I heard Panama in WalMart the other day. YUP

Walmart is like going to a different state. I need to head over there in a little bit. How many trucks with American flags in the back will I see in the parking lot with the 4th of July only a couple of days away?

It's so interesting that there is such a huge difference with the Target & Walmart customer
    base.

The Target near me is always loaded with middle class families, cute college girls, moms,
    normal people with jobs.

The Walmart not far from here, not even joking, it's like white trash, meth heads, really
skanky looking women, old people that weigh about 400 lbs.
Just the worst of the worst.

How does Target keep these people out?

    They profile. Seriously.

I will say that wal mart is a little more "diverse" if you will. Especially in the south.

No F'n shit!! That was a do wop be bop station maybe 5 or 10 years ago, now they're playing Jump for fucks sake. I get it, we are the oldies crowd now, but a least change the call sign melody or promos using old "Wolfman" stuff from the 60's.
