    Default What IS this, please?

    Hi all!

I don't think I've posted in the guitar room before (or maybe once, in the past). Anyway, I was wondering if you could tell me what this technique being utilised by Princey is, at the 4.02 / .03 mark - where his fingers barely touch the edges of the fretboard as they skip about? Does it have a name? Thank you!

Looks like he's just hitting open strings and hammering on to the string and picking it. Fairly common he's just making it very pronounced and showy.

Looks like he is speed-picking the e-string while tapping other notes in between. Eddie does this a lot, only he slides the tapped note upwards for a vicious, cool-sounding effect.

Happens at about 4:38 in this video.

Yessss, Eddie's good. But he doesn't make his guitar vanish at the end.

Thanks for the info, guys - I find it genuinely fascinating. I'm always full of admiration for people who can really play the guitar (or piano). My forte was woodwind instruments and whilst I have had a bash with the former, I found them both nigh on impossible to master!

Woodwinds, eh? Now we know why Chris is so smitten! LOL.

A good example I can think of is Angus Young doing this in Sin City, here's a cover video by some random on youtube because I couldn't find a good live recording.

Seriously though, and to try and answer your original question...

Yngwie Malmsteen did a lesson a while back, which has been transcribed a few times in Guitar World magazine and it's sister publications.
Part of it seems to perhaps be what Prince is doing in the video you posted. Keep in mind that I'm just taking a semi educated guess here, as a guitar player, and that Prince might've simply been in the moment, and ad libbing in his usual "show off/stage presence/exaggerated movements" manner...

Here are pics from the Yngwie lesson in the mag I have:

Actually Dibbs....Everyone here is just giving you a bum steer.
It's a very special technique, which Prince himself coined: "The four Finger Funk Flicker"
It was realized upon his discovery of his minds (3rd.) eye.

It had humble beginnings, utilizing a mere single finger, as evidenced below.

From there, and countless hours honing his ability to channel Gaia, 3 more fingers ultimately were employed...again, illustrated below.

This technique allowed him to play the guitar without any connection to the Earths confining laws of physics.
By simply "flicking " the neck, cosmic sounds would emanate from the fretboard, travel through the air upon the wings of ethereal funk fairies, ultimately reaching the ears of the Purple masses.

Now you know. I'm sorry you were given such a run-around....These Guitar Room Cats....It can get rough.

No problem at all Dibbs. We can be a selfish lot when it comes to discovering a certain technique.
Yaminub for instance, is currently expanding on it through meditation, and isolating every part of his body except his picking hand.
In this animation he is actually playing Beethoven's 9th. Symphony.

    He's very very good.

    Yep, Wasted Years.

Ed uses it in the Light Up The Sky solo too.
