    Default 2016 NBA Off-Season Thread

(By all means, allow the celebration to continue in the other thread for now.)

With an historic finals now in the rear-view, time for some offseason bickering. My revised list, with a few notes.

    All-time 1st team
    PG Magic
    SG Kobe
    SF LeBron
    PF Duncan
    C Kareem

    All-time 2nd team
    PG Isaiah
    SG MJ
    SF Bird
    PF Malone
    C Wilt

    All-time 3rd team
    PG Oscar
    SG West
    SF Dr. J.
    PF Dirk
    C Russell

    ***************

Cherry-picked honorable mentions / no particular order

    Pippen
When you look at the breakdowns, Julius Erving and Pippen were remarkably similar players. Dr. J. was a slightly more impactful individual player. Had Scottie gotten one ring apart from Michael’s six, I think I’d move him onto the third team (and he had plenty of opportunities on talented teams in Chicago, Houston and Portland).

    Barkley
Dirk has a ring, Sir Charles doesn’t. This is a case of championships separating players.

    Worthy
Not all that unlike Pippen’s position, a great, great player whose individual milestones were sacrificed on all-time great squads. What he would’ve done as the first scoring option for several seasons is one of the NBA’s biggest “what ifs.”

    Stockton
Stockton’s place is severely hindered by his lower-than-it-should-have-been PPG and his lack of a championship. When you’re being compared against some of the most offensively dynamic players in league history, this is going to matter. If not for Oscar’s significantly higher points output, the third team argument would be much tougher.

    Shaq
What could have been? Why couldn’t four titles and an earned designation of most dominant player in NBA history qualify Shaq for even the third team? Simply because he should’ve had eight titles. Or ten. Or a dozen. The Big Lazy misses the all-time list, and that’s truly a shame for a player of his unprecedented physical gifts.

    Olajuwon
A title while MJ wasn’t playing baseball would’ve helped here (95 playoffs don’t count).

Didn't know your MJ hatred made you delusional. I'll have to keep that in mind...

I reject positions as a defining factor, and list in no particular order:

    Top 5 players:
    Magic
    MJ
    Kobe
    Russell
    Bird

    Second 5:
    Big O
    Lebron
    Wilt
    Duncan
    Kareem

If Lebron keeps this shit up, maybe for one more year, he'll probably swap places with Bird.

Speaking of Lebron, when do we talk about the "when does he leave Cleveland" pool? Is he staying or going?

Oh, no hated. Just choosing to indulge on one selection. Because I can.

That's a completely different debate, though. Throw positions out and we're just making a greatest ever list. Think of this as an all-time NBA draft and you have to fill out a legitimate roster.

LeBron is the greatest forward ever, as we speak. I don't know how you make a convincing argument to the contrary.

I'm still of the opinion this topic is a media creation. Maybe in the waning days of his career, ala MJ. Not now, and probably never.

Seriously, LeBron would have to be a serious kind of asshole to pull that shit on Cleveland again. He's already a colossal douche, so maybe he will do it.

    Ah. Okay.

Will still stick with my top 5 - I'm going 3 guard offense.

Second 5 might need some work, though. Drop Wilt and add somebody. Not sure who. West maybe?

The way I look at it - I have one pick to start a team, and if given that choice, I would take Bird before I'd take Lebron. James is a better athlete. James is a better defender. I think Bird is a better shooter, better scorer, and a tougher competitor. I think they're about equal in passing the ball.

From what I hear, it's coming from Lebron's posse. Doesn't mean it's true. But it's not a media creation as far as I can tell. I actually would not be shocked either way.

We always have an offseason thread. Billy will close the other one up after the parade I'm sure.

Cool, I like thinking of All Time Teams.

    First Team:

    SG- Jordan
    PG- Magic
    C- Wilt
    PF- LeBron
    SF- Bird

    Second Team:

    SG- Kobe
    PG- Oscar
    C- Kareem
    PF- Duncan
    SF- Elgin Baylor

    Third Team:

    SG- West
    PG- Isiah
    C- Russell
    PF- K. Malone
    SF- Dr J

    Honorable Mentions:

Barkley, Moses, Dirk, Elvin Hayes, Olajuwon, Shaq, hmmm I feel like I'm missing some...

Edit- decided to put LeDouche on the first team at PF. Had to keep Bird on the First Team, but felt both Elgin and the Doctor needed to be somewhere in the top three tiers. Moving James to PF meant Barkley got bumped to the honorable mentions...

Oh snap! The Iceman deserves an honorable mention. Pete Maravich would've done greater things had his body held up better.
