Default It was 20 years ago today ...

That Van Halen and Sammy Hagar first parted ways.

June 16, 1996. Father's Day. Eddie Van Halen and Sammy Hagar engage in an acrimonious phone call that leads to Sammy's departure from the band. The following day, word spreads quickly that Sammy is out of Van Halen and David Lee Roth might be returning to the fold.

Where were you when you first heard the news? What was your reaction?

I was at work. My younger sister called me (on a landline, I didn't have a cell phone in 1996) and told me. I was shocked. Then I was excited. I never had any problem with a Sammy fronted VH. They were still my favorite band. By far. Multiple people had told me that Dave would one day return to VH. I didn't believe them.

I spent the next couple of months eagerly anticipating some new music and a possible tour from the reunited Van Halen. Then, this happened ...

I was at work and the DJ said Sammy and Van Halen had parted over creative differences. I was devastated. When the Roth rumors arose and then the MTV thing happened, it made me question everything I thought I knew about Eddie Van Halen. When Cherone was announced as the new singer, I knew Van Halen was done as a credible band and brand. Just unfucking believable how they could fuck that up so badly and permanently.

Oh, and I am still not over it.

I was working in Burbank. Some BS temp job. I walked into the break room that morning and someone had left an LA Times on table. I checked out the front page of the entertainment section and the top story on the side was a photo of Dave with the headline "Back in Van Halen." I was in shock. All those years it was finally happening. I was so out of it I even told my boss I might be a little out of whack because of this news. She was cool and surprisingly got it.

All summer I was anticipating a return of my favorite band. If they toured I was gonna follow it Dead-style.

And then the MTV Awards happened and everything just went back to the way it was......

I also remember hearing snippets of Me Wise Magic for the first time on Howard Stern's radio show. When the chorus kicked in I was

Oh, what could have and should have been.

I'm not gonna lie, i was elated when i'd heard.
I believe it was a co-worker that told me, and my initial reaction, was
    "Roth is coming back!"

I was very much interested in hearing what these guys would sound like together,
    so many years later.
I wasn't a fan of the Hagar fronted version of the band, but i also wasn't a fan of
    solo DLR.

When it all went to shit, and Cherone got the nod, i thought it was ridiculous.
Then Dave's letter to the press, then Sammy's rebuttals to Ed's claims...
I just wanted a new CVH album in '97.

first, I love MWM. That song is f'n kick ass.

Second, the move really in all reality killed the band. yes, I understand the thought process that if Dave would have rejoined the band in 96 it would have been huge but he didn't. Ed's power plays destroyed the band.

I get that people were thrilled with ADKOT and Tokyo, great...good for you but this stupid move by Ed basically derailed the band for almost 20 years.

    Worst year ever for VH.

Strike One - Parting ways with Sammy
Strike Two - Not bringing back Dave
    Strike Three - Hiring Gary

That was a very bad at bat.

I had been waiting for DAVE to come back since 1985 (I do like VH/Sammy).

When even MTV started airing the "Welcome back Dave" Promo I thought it was a sure thing. VH would tour with Dave all through 96-97. It would be epic.

We also got this cover. THE NEW VH?!?!?

So close, then our hopes dashed away.

1996 also had the return of Steve Perry to Journey... at least there was a full album but then no tour and Steve was out again

Who woulda guessed that KISS would be the only one to do it right that year?

Yep, it was the LA times story that informed me.

I wasn't surprised about Sam leaving, the Balance tour had shown Ed was edgy. I was surprised Dave was coming back. The two new tunes on BOV1 were obviously a stellar sign of what was to come. But that damned MTV gig showed pretty clearly Eddie wasn't exactly thrilled.

But the true surprise was hiring a third guy seemingly outta the blue. I remember thinking "he can't really expect us to swallow another singer." But we might have...if the fucking album was any good. Which it was not, unfortunately.

It was a quad whammy....Sam out, Dave maybe in, nope a new guy, shitty album.

VH has never recovered from all that. It was just too much clusterfuckery.

At first my thought process was "it's a band, I prefer Sam but these things happen". Liked MWM, didn't and still don't like CGTSNM. Thought an album with Dave would have been interesting.

Then there was an article in EW where Sam and Ray Daniels went at it. That article convinced me that if RD wasn't involved Sam would still have been around (I thought that at the time, not so much now)

    III sucked.

Ed said "I know you're Gary Cherone but sing like Sammy Hagar" and it was doomed.

    They never recovered.

now, with the hiatus and all the trash talking I'm done with the drama. Even if Sam comes back (don't think he will btw) it'll be a mess.

Unless Ed commits to a real new record, with new material, I'm pretty much done with them, regardless of who is singing.

I love the music on MWM. Don't really like anything about CGTSNM, but I figured it was just a couple rushed Best of filler tunes. NO worries, now that they're back together a full new album will be WAY better. But of course that album never came and the consolation prize was the Extreme singer and VH3

I don't remember the exact timeline, did they announce Gary AFTER the BOV1 came out?
