Default I'm never going to Orlando!

How in the fuck is this possible?

A family on vacation, and their toddler, barely at water's edge,
gets dragged off & eaten by an alligator?

Why is this area not sealed off to the public?
If open, why are these alligators allowed to roam free?

I keep reading about people getting attacked in Australia, now in Florida.
Who wants to go to these places?

I cannot imagine the horror that child experienced, along with the horror
    & guilt of the parent.

Why are there no safety precautions in place?

People are ignorant, that's how it's possible.

I wouldn't go anywhere near any body of water in Florida. Hell, people find 'em in their swimming pools and on golf courses.

My dad and my uncle came across a small one when they were teenagers. They tied it's snout shut, threw it in the trunk and took it home and let it lose in the back yard. When they asked my grandma to guess what they brought home she immediately said "an alligator" and ruined their "surprise." When my grandpa got home he was not amused. LOL.

Gators in Florida are kind of like bears in Yellowstone. You're not likely to ever encounter one, but they are there and if you're not vigilant you may have an unpleasant encounter with one.

EDIT: BTW my mom lives in Orlando. It's been a rough couple days down there.
The only genre I really know is Van Halen.

It's not the alligator that's out of place.

How does a "parent" let a 2 year old play in the water????????? A 2 year old shouldn't be left alone to play in a kiddie pool let alone a fuckin lake in Florida

I know I know....a kid can get away in the blink of an eye, you don't have kids you don't know....balah blah excuses blah blah Bullshit.

I feel horrible for the 2 year old becasue it wasn't his fault and is now dead because of his parent's negligence.

I went to Florida many times as a youngster and had nothing but the time of my life. Never saw an alligator, either, except in brochures.

I'm heading to Disney World next week with a 3 year old and 4 month old. Yikes.

I couldn't help but wonder when reading the story if someone shot the alligator before he made contact with the kid if people would be up in arms over it like they were with that stupid gorilla incident. Probably not because alligators are ugly as hell.

I'm pretty sure the dad was there at the instant of the attack. That’s how gators attack – wait for an animal to come to get a drink and then pounce.

I can see me and one of my daughters strolling along the waters edge. People from Nebraska aren't naturally going to think about alligators.

They've killed 5 gators so far to look for any remains.

I read an article that the Disney has "nuisance alligators" removed (don't know if that means killed or just moved out of the area?) but you can't assume there are no gators in a Florida lake.

Preventable tragedy all the way around. A TWO YEAR OLD left alone to play in/near a Florida lake. I can't even imagine the horror that kid probably suffered being pulled under and then....

I wouldn't trust a 2 year old that close to water just for drowning fears, but looking at that picture, I could see how one would just trust that it's ok to go by the water.

That's the first I've seen of a daytime shot of the scene, wow. I was picturing something different not so close to where people would normally be. I mean that's right up by the seating area. But still, a kid that young shouldn't' be anywhere near the water IMO

I remember going to Florida as a young kid and my dad was telling me not to hang out by the shore. However my dad oozes common sense.

Its a tragedy but there are fucking alligators in Florida. In fact didn't one attack a woman or something with her feet in the water a few years ago? Wild animals are still wild animals. Snakes and spiders can kill kids too.

Think about it this way. 52 million people visit Disney World a year. I would venture to say that 10 million are probably young kids who can be attacked by a gator. Lets say since the inception it averages out to be only 2 million a year. 40 years since I was there so that is about 80 million kids. 1 kid gets eaten out of 80 million. I think the odds are pretty good that its a very isolated incident

Yeah, there's lounge chairs just a few feet away! Were people sitting there having drinks and dinner with alligators wandering all around? Maybe if alligators were visibly in the area, the thought was, "Sit here and enjoy nature, but be ready to move fast if you have to."

If the gator was preoccupied by the kid, would it be hard to wrestle it? From what I've seen about gator wrestling, their jaws have hundreds of pounds of closing pressure, but only about five pounds of opening pressure. Gator wrestlers first run their hands over the gators' eyes to close them, which confuses the gator, then they get their hands on that snout. As long as you sit far enough on their back that they can't hit you in the head with that tail, you've got them.

I wouldn't let my dog go for a swim in any Florida waterway.

I'm sitting here looking at my two year old right now and it is obvious to me that the gator sensed an easy meal. Without a larger adult stand right next to him he's easy prey.

The lake has no swimming signs posted all over it for a reason. Being from Nebraska is not an excuse, you need to educate yourself that no body of water is safe in Florida and even lakes in resorts are potentially harboring gators, water moccasins, and other potential dangers.

I do truly feel horrible for everyone involved but it was preventable with a little better judgment.

Plus you can eat gators. And use their hides.

Aren't there swimming pools at that hotel/resort? Probably safer.
