Default Did the fact that the 5150 studio was in Eddie's back yard ...

Lead to, or at least hasten Dave's departure from Van Halen?

    I think it did.

Exactly. It gave Ed the ultimate home court advantage and I'm sure Dave hated that.

Diver Down and Crazy from the Heat, hastened Dave's departure from VH.
1984 got his records "played in Tahiti" and such, which also fueled his coked out ego.

Yep, Ed didn't have to listen to Dave anymore, he could record Jump and whatever he wanted without being told what to do like Dave did throughout the creation of the band. Dave was squeezed out and besides, he saw greener pastures on the other side with a solo career. While many might have guessed that those greener pastures would turn brown quickly, no one probably would have guessed that Sam could re-ignite the fire and bring Ed and VH right back to where they were. Dave bet against Ed and lost, but if it weren't for Sam, I think both would have regretted the whole thing.

    What he said.
    SOME VH LINKS CLASSICS

"Sammy is fat, Dave is bald, Mike is next in line to be the Pope, Eddie is a drunk, Wolfie is fat, Gary is gay, CVH is VH, Mike is VH, Sammy can outsing Dave on a tequilla hangover, Eddie is a meth head, How Many Say I is the worst VH song ever, Up for Breakfast is a close second, Dave was horrible at radio and everybody hates the assless chaps.
Ok I think that covers everything." Ziggysmalls

I didn't say we'll get to the destination, but until Alex comes out a says what a complete waste of carbon DLR is, we're still climbing, so strap yourselves in.

That's why the vocals were recorded at Jim Hanson studios for A Different Kind of Truth. Dave hated 5150!

    Yes.

It's already been established to death.

But didn't stop DLR from popping by in 2000.

Then ADKOT- EVH stated they could've saved a bundle doing the whole album there and the initial demos sounded better.

Another question to wonder is why Donn Landee ( after practically building the studio himself according to EVH....), .......was and has been MIA since 1988. (????)

Even Ted Templeman popped up again in '91 but no Donn Landee since 1988. Rudy Lerien came back to work for EVH after an absence........but Donn Landee.......who the hell knows.

That's an article or interview I'd be interested in. Finding out more about Donn Landee and why or what happened that he's never really popped up or rarely mentioned in relation to VH.

Another one that Eddie shunned, later in life.

Ed used to constantly reference Donn's input in all those classic VH era interviews:
    "Donn & i think alike..."
"Well, Donn & i were sneaking into the studio, while Dave & Ted were..."
"That wasn't really Ted's doing, it was Donn & i..."

Sometimes it felt like he sort of diminished Templemen's influence in favor of Donn's.
It was like Ed put Ted in the "alliance with Dave" box, while he & Donn were midnight
    studio renegades.

Something must have gone south along the way, because now Landee is in the
    Michael Anthony category.

Yeah- You know how it is how EVH in the interviews said it was him and Donn Landee.....then all of a sudden......

Poof!!!!- Never hear another word about him after 1988.

Maybe Ed was miffed that Michael Anthony's bass wasn't captured enough in the mix.

    Yeah- that's probably it.

Ed probably went to bat over Mike and Donn insisted against hearing the bass.

    Yeah Yeah- That's the ticket.

Fuck Donn Landee. Fuck him all the way to hell.

Nah- I'm just kidding around there with that last part.

Greg did interview Donn Landee for the VH Rising book, but not so sure what was included. But shows he's still around and can be interviewed.

    Wonder what the deal is.

You're right, it was post 1988 & Donn became an after thought:

    Who? That guy?
Oh man, Donn was great at getting us coffee....
Can't recall what else he did, since i was engineering all the recorded stuff.

One day, poor Donn probably mentioned:
Hey Ed, you're guitar is like 30 degrees above E flat, let's get you in tune for the rec...

    WHAT DID YOU JUST SAY?!

Didn't Donn Landee basically retire? I'm positive that I've read an interview with Ed trying to get Don to work with him again and Ed saying that he was retired & not really interested in doing it again???
