Default Perfect Pedal Order with Steve Vai

This was cool. Steve has some great insight here (also fun watching him noodle around with certain effects):

Neat to see & hear Steve in that setting, so to speak.

Where would you guys put a pitch shifter in your signal paths? Pre or post distortion?
Also, delay before reverb, or vice versa?

Yes Steve Vai is a cool guy.

I don't really have an elaborate pedal board. I just have 4 pedals (5150, EVH phaser, flanger, MXR delay, and a Cry Baby Wah). But I want to build it up more. I like the stereo chorus Steve was demoing in the video, I'll probably pick up one.

I've always ran my EHX Micro POG before overdrive/distortion. And yes, most folks choose to run delay right before reverb.

I put anything that's basically not a time-based effect out front.

    1) Depends on what you're doing with the pitch shifter. If you're after Tom Morello whammy bends then I prefer pre-distortion because then the preamp can shape those super high frequencies. But anything else (harmonies, octave doubling, microshift, detune) works better in post-distortion or in the FX Loop. This way you're doubling a distorted tone, and that sounds more articulate and more like two guitars playing together. Whereas if you were doubling or harmonizing before distortion then you're distorting the already combined signal, making it sound more like you're playing both parts on the same guitar, and often making the tones more muddy.

    2) I always put delay before reverb as I feel you have more control over the effects this way. With delay before reverb you only get the verb from the main signal and then the gradually fading repeats. It is cleaner this way. If you were to put verb before delay then your delay will repeat the already reverb'd signal, covering up delay repeats resulting in mud.

But as everything in life and guitar, YMMV.

    Great post! Thanks, Jedi.

I run an EHX Pitch Fork, set to one octave lower with about a 60% wet-to-dry mix, after my MXR Super Badass analog distortion pedal. So far so good.
Stealth5150 did those great clips with a Mooer Pitch Box, set to emulate Ed's Trans Trem use on Summer Nights. That's the one I was wondering about, to putz around with, as I haven't seen him on here recently. They're really small, and I see them all over eBay for almost dirt cheap.

As for the reverb & delay - I answered my own question through trial and error over the weekend, by doing exactly what you posted today! Haha.

Pitch shifter/Harmonizer always post gain for me....but then that's JUST ME. It's what I like.
Same for Delay and/or reverb....If both, I tend to put delay first, and reverb 2nd.
Effects like phase, wah, and flanger, I always put between the guitar and the amp.
I always find post gain, or in an FX loop, the sound is just way too intense, plus I like the little nuances that come alive in relation to your picking attack with those effects.
Post gain...it loses all that...At least to my ear, and just sounds kinda stark and over the top too me, but then I'm an old fart now, so these huge swept overdrive sounds are just modern sonic voodoo to my ear!
There's always situations where it could be used for some particular effect, but in my rig, those effects are generally always in the front.

There are rare times when I will put my vintage Evans Tape Echo through the front of the amp just for a particular flavor.
