    Default I think I found Eddie's inspiration for "In 'N' Out"'s riff

This is probably very obvious and everyone knows it, but I had a eureka moment about this earlier today. Listen to the first few seconds of Rock and Roll Damnation and that's the beginning of In N Out's riff. Or really, the beginning of In N Outs riff is Rock and Roll Damnation

    Hmmm...
Never noticed that before, nor have I ever heard that comparison!

Probably just (IMO) a case of similar "shapes" and similar intervals, like the standard I-IV-V chord changes that have formed a gazillion tunes?
Then again, Ed loves AC/DC, so who knows!?!?!? Haha.

    Good call.

I mean, playing both songs on the guitar:

    Rock and Roll Damnation
    e---------------|
    B-----------8--|
    G--------9-----|
    D-----7--------|
    A--0-----------|
    E---------------|

    In N Out
    e----------------------------------|
    B----------8---------------7------|
    G-------9--------9p7------7------|
    D----7-----------------7----------|
    A----------------------------------|
    E----------------------------------|

and Powerage is Eddie's favorite AC/DC record... you decide!

I've said before, man - there's only so many ways to play an A power chord! LOL.
Some bands/tunes/riffs are going to sound similar. Like Eddie said, there's only 12 notes to work with. Yet, the songs in question are about as different as can be.

I'll paraphrase a Roth quote about any VH & AC/DC rivalry - "It'll all come down to who plays Eddie Van Halen's solo, better!"
"There's too many people on this basketball that's floating around the sun, who are too afraid to allow themselves to FEEL" - Edward Van Halen
"Van Halen was never about the singer..." - a very wise fan.

Actually this doesn't surprise me at all.
There's a clip on YouTube...Actually it's a collage of clips of Ed from around Fuck thru III.
There's a short clip of him jamming backstage with some dude trading licks,...Pretty sure it was around the FUCK tour, and I think the guy was from that band that Bruck was in, and Eddie distinctly referenced the album while they're dickin' around, then says " It's kinda like Powerage", or something to that effect. So obviously it was alive and well in his brain at the time.
I never put the two together, but it's cool you caught it. You can hear it now! Lol!
He may have been a bit inspired, or it just kind of evolved into the music subconsciously...but like someone else above said, there's only so many ways you can play an A power chord....and shaped do often inadvertently sound similar at times to something else..who knows?

Almost all songwriters will admit that they often get songwriting ideas and inspirations based upon listening to other music.

An arrangement idea, an intro, and outro, a hook, a lyrical phrase, can all be ideas that form the foundation of a new song.

Some of the biggest bands of all time have made careers out of heavily borrowing from old delta blues and European folk tunes.
Taylor Swift is nice to look at. Adele can sing.

Emperor Brett - "I can't believe you guys are analyzing song-by-song Van Halen III? What next, analyzing the script of Stroker Ace looking for some shred of Citizen Kane?"

David Lee Roth did the impossible. He made Van Halen better. Deal with it!

    Preferred pronouns: he/him/his

Hurricane Halen - Let's all gingery touch our sword tips!!!

Yeah, I know the clip(s) you're talking about.

    - Ed jamming some Jeff Beck, on a Telecaster.
    - Ed showing off "It Ain't Over 'Till It's Over", an unreleased tune w/Gary.
    - Ed jamming on a black EBMM, backstage.
    - 1993 tour guitar solo, where he includes the intro for Pleasure Dome, etc.

There's some GREAT stuff in those clips! I really would've liked to have heard that tune from the scrapped 2nd album w/Cherone.

Yeah...That's the one! I like the Jeff Beck part too on the Tele. He kinda cracks up once he realizes the guy's filming him.

If you ever watch the clip again, check out the insane finger stretch/gymnastics he does on the trans black EBMM, in the backstage part of the video.

I love those clips. Thanks for posting this again!

This is the kind of stuff I'd like to see in a VH boxset/bonus rarities package...
