Starting in about 1997 there was a resurgence of those early 80's bands. They were all touring together too. Styx and REO had a bunch of tours together. Billy Squier with Styx and Bad Company. Journey. Def Leppard. Heart. Pretty much all the bands of my youth, except Night Ranger just never managed to get out here to Boston. Finally saw them a couple of years ago, they did a short set and can't remember who they were with.

So about the only band left that I really would LOVE to see is Damn Yankees. Apparently they can all tour separately, and they all SAY they want to get back together, but they just can't quite figure it out...

I was into the "popular" music of the time, when I got hooked on Van Halen.

Michael Jackson, Duran Duran, Culture Club, Wham, etc. Also Ozzy (with Jake E. Lee) and W.A.S.P.
Then I heard "Beat It", and dug back to get the VH albums via import, as I lived in South Africa. The rest is history!

I loved KISS as a young kid. My sisters had all their albums. They painted my face all the time. I was a member of the KISS Army and had all kinds of merchandise. When they brought home Van Halen and I heard Running With the Devil, that was it. Van Halen was my favorite band from then on.

I had a record/8-track tape player. I sat candles all around and on top of it. I had a big puffy set of headphones. I used to act like a DJ. I played VH, KISS, Styx, ELO, Kansas, Foreigner, and threw in some Eagles and Fleetwood Mac. What a memory.

Mine was Yes. Back in the day we all had the back of our Dungaree jackets painted with our favorite bands. Mine was painted with the album cover of Tales From Topographical Oceans.....until I heard the first VH album !!!! Needless to say it was painted over immediately !!

I didn't really 'discover' Van Halen beyond knowing Jump in Kindergarten and Right Now just because I lived in America until Balance came out. While it is (or maybe was, now) STP for a while, that didn't happen til after VH.

So at that point in time it was probably Eric Clapton. I nearly wore out my cassette of Unplugged. That was over once Pilgrim came out, though.

I was exposed to VH at a REALLY young age by my oldest sister, who was 15 when the debut came out. Thanks, sis!! By the time I was in the second grade a couple years later, I was listening to them on my own and they were my favorite. So it's been the Mighty Van Halen from the get go. But, I did also love Blondie at that time, and had a big crush on Deborah Harry. In retrospect, pretty surprising, since I've always been into brunettes and my first love was Jaclyn Smith, the "Perfect" Charlie's Angel.

It was Queen for me. I remember I had the Sheer Heart Attack and News of the world albums. My older brother brought home VH1 when it first came out and I was hooked. Never did buy another Queen album after that, until their greatest hits CD many years later.

Jaclyn was simply stunning, and ageless for many years. Ladd pretty damn beautiful. I never understood the brouhaha over Farrah.

I'd say Motley Crue, and Whitesnake was the runner-up.

I'm 40 and my first musical purchase (well, my parents') was the "Eye of the Tiger" 12" single, followed by either "Metal Health" or "Thriller" on cassette as my first album--I think MH. Quiet Riot was my first favorite band/poster but not for a long time. After "Shout at the Devil" The Crue was my favorite for I think a couple of years. Then, after "Look What the Cat Dragged In" Poison took the lead for a little bit until "Whitesnake" came out. Then they held the lead for a year or so until "Appetite for Destruction" and Guns N' Roses held the title. Then "Don't Be Cruel" came out, and for some reason Bobby was my favorite for a short period of time. Then, for a couple years I had no favorite and didn't listen to music much...until Christmas vacation 1991 when I "fell in love."

"Poundcake" was the song that changed my life.

KISS was my first band - VH my second and to this day I'm still a fan of both. No other band has given me so much through my teenage years, college, marriage, divorce, then dealing with my daughters through their teenage years...Now my kids are grown up, graduated from college and on their own but when they hear VH or KISS they think of me...that's pretty cool.

    Kiss.

They peaked in '77-78 with Alive II, and up until then, they were cranking out flawless glam rock for the time.

But by '79, they were jumping the shark with Dynasty and going disco. When I heard Dance the Night Away that same year, I knew Kiss was over for me.
VH were sure to steal their thunder. When I went back and discovered VH I, it was so far beyond what Kiss was doing that I couldn't even process stuff like Eruption.

Right then I knew wanted to be Ed and not Paul Stanley any more.

Do any of you remember that quote from DLR way back when the first album was released when he said, "We knew we'd officially made it when people started accusing us of being KISS without their make up?"
