    Cool idea for a thread.

The Beatles and John Lennon solo, I suppose. I didn't really have a favorite artist. My first cassette was Lennon's Double Fantasy purchased a month before he was killed in 1980 when I was 10, and I discovered Van Halen in 1982 or 1983. I listened to a lot of corporate rock, Styx, Foreigner, Police, Cars -- all album sides taped off the radio. Pyromania, Metal Health and Shout at the Devil were my first real hard rock tapes. I was told that ACDC was satanic so I avoided them. Then the Van Halen deluge hit.

    Ha! Ha!

I remember hearing the same thing when I was a kid. That AC/DC stood for "Anti-Christ/Devil's Child." So they scared the shit out of me when I was 7 or 8. I think the Nightstalker got caught wearing an AC/DC shirt so that enhanced the "evilness" of them for me.

Now they're one of my top 5 favorite bands and all that satanic shit is laughable.

    There's a lesson there I think...
The only genre I really know is Van Halen.

I was born in 1985, and I've loved Van Halen for most of my life. The only thing I listened to regularly that predates my interest in VH is Genesis, going back to 1988/1989.

Definitely KISS. But running a close second at that particular time was Fleetwood Mac and Heart. I was soooo into the first two albums with Buckingham and Nicks and the first two Heart albums.

I think it was Highway to Hell that did it for the parents I knew. I still can vividly remember my uncle freaking out because my cousin had that album. (His two obsession albums at that time were Highway to Hell and VH II. Maybe my uncle had a point....later my cousin went to college and became an atheist. My poor uncle.

That is so hilarious in retrospect. I wonder if parents knew that made a band more enticing in a way? That element of danger is very seductive to a teenage boy. In music, the "they are devil worshipers" has to be a close second to the gay rumor. Not surprising that later so many metal bands just embraced it because it got them attention.

Didn't have one favorite pre-VH. Before 1984 for me it was a mix. I'd say Foreigner, Styx, Night Ranger and Billy Squier were probably my pre-VH favorites. And they are still among my non-VH favorites.

Foreigner 4 was to my recollection my first real album, got it for my 12th birthday. I LOVED that album. My older brother had some older Foreigner, and he got me into Styx and Billy Squier as he had Grand Illusion, Pieces of Eight, and Don't Say No. MTV turned me onto Night Ranger with Midnight Madness.

Please note that I am completely disregarding my infatuation at 10-11 years old with Air Supply. Ugh. I have no defense other than youthful stupidity.

Van Halen became my favorite band in 1984 - it's cliche but the Jump video got me. But they became something far more significant to me when Hagar joined. I can intellectually agree about the weaknesses of Hagar (although not to the extent that some take it to on here), but it just doesn't matter. Hagar era Van Halen was the soundtrack of my late teens and 20's, and I will never, ever experience anything like that again.

Haha. Yep. Night Ranger. Seems like they made a permanent indent in many of our collective lexicons. Mine too. I remember when Dawn Patrol dropped. I thought it was a cool album title. But heck even to this day the dueling axe solos on DTMYLM are pretty wicked good.

AC/DC, and I was just as obsessed with them as VH pretty much until they brought Axl in.

DTMYLM and Sing Me Away still rock. This one, too ...
