Guns N' Roses. All I listened to was Appetite when it first came out. Then I saw this on MTV one night:

Man, that was it for me. I was hooked.

Then UYI one and two came out and I was kind of disappointed. Not the same vibe.

Then I bought F.U.C.K. and a friend of mine showed me LWAN and that was that!

The only genre I really know is Van Halen.

I was aware of Van Halen songs and liked them before 1984 came out, but I didn't own any Van Halen albums until 1984. Prior to that, I as a fan of Def Leppard.

When I bough the 1984 album is when I "discovered" them as a band, meaning that I got to listen to the songs that weren't heard on the radio often.

From that point, I wondered what other deep cuts I was missing and bought the other 5 albums. After that, I was hooked. That's why to this day, I'm more fond of the deep cuts than any of their songs that are universally/commercially known.

I was also pretty fond of The Police and Night Ranger.

None. It was VH for me from the get-go. I was taken to the '81 tour not knowing what I was seeing. After the show that week, I purchased my very first rock album on cassette. It was Fair Warning. Still my favorite rock album ever to date from any band. I didn't buy any other albums for another two years, whereupon I purchased Rush Permanent Waves and the Police Synchronicity on cassette tapes. Not so coinkydinkily, Rush and the Police continue to this day to round out my top three favorite bands.

    Same for me. None.

    They were the "Big Bang".

Wish I could say the same today.

For me Van Halen was pretty much the start of it all. Got into them in 78. Prior to that for Rock music I was pretty much listening to whatever my older sister was listening to. Fleetwood Mac, Journey, J Geils Band etc and through my mother and stepfather was Prince, Bee Gees, Donna Summer, Santana, etc. When my sister brought home the Van Halen1 album on 8 track I took hold of it and listened to it all the time.
I used to jog but the ice cubes kept falling out of my glass.

    KISS was my first.
I loved them so much, and it was always about the music first for me, even then.
The makeup & theatrics were the icing on the cake.

Then i became simultaneously obsessed with Aerosmith & AC/DC.
    Soon after, Van Halen.

After VH changed singers & direction, i went full-on Metal.

I actually got into Metallica with the debut in 1983, and by RTL & the first Garage Days/
Creeping Death EP, i was HARDCORE into that band.
HARDCORE, like i had been with VH years before.

I remember, literally, choking up after the first spin of the "Master of Puppets" cassette.
My mom bought it for me the day it came out.

I choked up because it was so fucking good, and i knew deep in my heart, they would never
better this particular batch of song's.
    The album blew me away.

Today, i'd say BJM is my favorite band.
As i get older, i'm more into a variety of bands & music.

Having said that, my inner kid/metal head, is always lurking within me.

Martin Popoff just wrote a book about the NY band, Riot, i found out about it,
and there was that kid again!

I was like, I NEED THIS BOOK!

Before I discovered VH in 78, I would mainly listen to my brother's 8-tracks of the Beatles, Aerosmith, Led Zeppelin and Elton John.

Before I admit who it was, my disclaimer is that I discovered VH when I was 12 with 1984 and then took the deep dive backward into their catalog. Before that it was Springsteen. Again, 1984 is when that ended -- I was into his first two albums and obviously Born to Run, Darkness and The River were great too. When Born in the USA came out, like I said I was 12, and I already knew I needed to find something cooler. VH was like my savior from being a die-hard Billy Joel fan.

I still dig old Bruce tho, and don't care who knows!!
