Default Bands - like VH - only touring USA?

Hope this is the right place for this thread.

I am a UK based fan who has travelled to the US three times, as Van Halen never tour Europe anymore....

It was worth it every time, but has made me think about this question. Do any of this forum members, based in the USA, ever travel specifically to see a band in Europe, or would they?

Are there any European bands you like that it is just as frustrating that they never tour the USA?

    Just wondered...

True. But any excuse to get a stamp in my passport is a good one.

I had really hoped that VH would've broadened their touring stops in the last few years.
Granted, they did hit the Aussie shoreline and Japan as well, yet I know the European markets wanted to see them too. Especially with Roth back in the fold.

I'm also surprised they didn't hit South America as well, because those fans are pretty rabid for the band.
To answer to OP, no, I haven't travelled overseas to see any band. Yet...

There are two main reasons why VH doesn't tour abroad anymore.

    1. Ed and Al did not like their reception last time they went to Europe (i.e., opening for Bon Jovi).

    2. Al does not like traveling abroad anymore hardly at all (thus no South America).

They went to Japan because Dave was insistent due to his recent forays and interests there.

Australia, have no idea why they played there, but good on them for doing so. Those Aussies are deprived when it comes to arena hard rock visits.

    That's too bad...
In 1984, Dave told the Donnington crowd that they were "A whole lot louder than the United States!"

Obviously the band has a lot of fans over there. Shame they haven't had the same luxury the North American audiences have - multiple tours and some repeat stops in certain cities.

In truth, VH does not have that many European fans anymore. Such is the way of not touring in a region and, as always, the lack of prolific output.

VH has lost a fair amount of fanbase right here in the states.

Again, the soap operas and the lack of output have unfortunate results.

Yeah, they aren't selling out stadiums here either, that's true.
They do have fans in the overseas markets though.

Again, I think it's too bad they didn't take a stripped down stage production over there. Even like 1995 Milan Italy types of gigs...

Having some fans and having enough fans to fill the o2 arena are two different things, alas.

I am sure they considered it. But after projected takes and analysis of box office draw, their accountants and promoters probably determined it wasn't worth the costs and expenditures required to tour over there.

Most bands at the VH level of touring are about making money. It's not about appeasing the fans.

They sell out the hot markets here (NY, LA, Vegas, etc) mostly due to fans of 'classic hard rock.'

Not because of VH diehard fans.

CF sold out over here in 2012 - but they were realistic and only played at small venues (3000-ish). I think the problem for VH now would be ego...Yes, they could undoubtedly fill a few medium size venues (10,000-ish) across the continent but would that be sufficient to entice them over, with all of the costs that such a trip incurs? I have my doubts: it would feel like a come-down for them - and not a particularly lucrative one, either.

In short, they've blown it over here by being so recalcitrant about everything. And, if I'm honest, I wouldn't pay to go over to the USA to see them now - not even with Sam...I've lost interest and enthusiasm - just as they have done, when it comes to their European fans (or former fans, I should say).

Yup. They've lost the same right here in their home base.

Ya can't go for those long extended hiatuses from product or appearances and not expect some measure of that.

The economics for touring have changed so much since 2008. The crowds are so much smaller and likely the price for not being present in the market is steeper because of that. One upside is as fans you do see more festivals and multi band tours now.

Some american bands tour very little in the US but more overseas especially if they play heavier music which is simply not as popular in the US. Y&T does Europe every year but only a handful of US dates, Twisted Sister did well in past years in Europe and really well in S.America despite really struggling to make a dime out in the US outside of the tri-state area. Europe is a better market for heavier bands
