Default Speaker cable for my new Cab

    Hey guys,

I picked up a 1X12 EVH cab to go with my 5150 III 1X12 combo amp to give it just a little more thump. Its going right next to the amp and I need a cable to connect them. What is a short cable I should get to get a good sound? The cab does not come with the speaker cable.

    thanks

    Rob

I use monster. No particular reason but it was 19.99 at GC so I bought it. And I use it with my combo and 2x12 as well. Sounds good.

I don't think you could go wrong with Mogami either.
I've not tried Monster speaker cable, but I've never had any issues with Mogami. It is cheaper than Monster...I can tell you that. The thing I love most about it is it outperforms so many other manufacturers out there. Very low impedance, and durable as hell. I've accidentally had heavy studio furniture sitting on top of a cable....One for years, and it still held up where others would have broken shortly there after.
I'd say either this or Monster.

    Wire size is different
You must use a speaker cable
    I see recommendations for a 3' cable--If it was me, I would get a 6' cable
Simply because a 3' cable is good for a head sitting on a cab.
You will have a greater distance from head across combo amp to cab.
I know this from experience with a Peavey 6505+ combo into an EVH 1X12.
You might measure this before you get a speaker cable.

I will let the smart people here give you the technical reason but I know when I got my first non-combo amp about a year ago I asked the same question and everyone said absolutely not.

As other's said, wire size is different, and also has different inner shielding/insulator, and impedance characteristics.
If you were playing at very low volume, you'd probably be ok, but when you start adding volume, the wire can actually heat up.(sometimes a lot) When it does, it's efficiency drops, and it can actually load your amp.
This is timely, because not long ago a friend of mine accidentally used a guitar cable in his cab. These guys play damn loud at their rehearsal space. He was lucky he didn't pop the amp, but he noticed when they were quiet between songs at their space, his amp was making some clicking, and pinging sounds, and it was losing volume.
When he was checking it out, he noticed the cable was quite hot.
He called me describing the symptoms, and as soon as he mentioned the cable being warm, I asked "check if it's one of your guitar cables by mistake".
He comes back on the phone.."Oh fuck!" confirmed what I thought! lol.
I told him just let the amp cool, make sure you've got a proper speaker cable in, and if it doesn't ping anymore, it should be fine.
If anyone has ever used one of those old powersoaks, you know what your amp will do under a static resistive load. The amp will pop, ping, smell kinda funky...etc.. Not a good thing. I don't think a wrong cable could be anywhere near as bad as those old units, but an amp needs to breathe.
He caught it fairly early which is good. Don't think he even lost a tube.
A transformer would be a bummer.

I had a friend who used to use guitar cables instead of speaker cables for his head. I used to say, you know - they make those speaker cables for a reason. He used to say, " Yeah, to charge idiots like you more money." Then his amp head fried.

Lol! And then the idiot balance shifted!
Sometimes it does happen by accident though.
I don't know if manufacturers still do it as I have not needed to buy any speaker cable for a long time, but some used to color code the little insulator ring near the tip.
Guitar cable would have a dark, or black ring, and speaker cable would be a lighter color, or straight up white.
My Mogami stuff is like that. Don't know about Monster or any of the other ones these days. I've got some Mogami cables that are almost 15 to 20 yrs old actually. Still just as good as the day I bought them.

I just wanted to let people know that it DOES come with the 50w head. I would assume the 100 comes with one as well.

As a guy who just bought his first tube amp a few weeks ago, I can tell you that this kinda stuff actually scared me: "Turning on head without having a load connected." "Not using a speaker cable."

I **think** that Howard Kaplan himself stated that some of the older amps have the issue where if a load isn't connected you can have problems, but that they specifically designed that not to happen with the 5150iii. Do not take that statement as Gospel, as I don't wanna be liable if you blow your amp up. :P

I have heard Mogami are incredible, and that Monster isn't as great as they claim to be, they just have a great marketing team. (Shrug) I use Monster in my car and in for my TV, so I would probably use them for guitar stuff as well.....if I wasn't already running EVH cables and whatever came in the box with my head. :P
